If they are used be sure to get the recipt for them, the shocks are only warrentied for life for the original owner. Ok and you want to lift it so you would want the Land Cruiser coils, but if you did that then the shocks you are buying for $30 wont help you because they are not rated for that kind of lift.

Go to the Old Man Emu web-site and they should explain the difference in the different model numbers. The 890 coil gives you about a 1.5 to 2" lift and the coils are rated at a certain strength, then the 891 is rated at a little higher strength (which makes the compression less), so they give you about a 2.5-3." lift due to less compression. This is just as an example of why the different numbers. If you plan on carrying heavy loads or towing, I would suggest at least the medium rated coils like the 891's. I have the Rancho RS5000 on the rear with OME 891, and they work great. But, if you do not replace the front shock-struts, you will most likely se the rear end sitting much higher than the front when you install the new coils in the rear.

Here's a question for you Rancho guys...what model number Rancho RS5000 shock are you buying that will accomodate the LC 7 wrap coils that I'm about to install? I just spoke with Rancho tech support who told me they only sell the RS5187 to fit the 4Runner...and that it will not accomodate any lift. Actually the first guy told me that the RS5221 is the shock I want, but that one is listed under Dodge Ram 3/4 ton...
Any thoughts? I know somebody is running Rancho with 3 inches of lift...so which Rancho exactly?:shrug:

Fonerunner, why do you think i asked you what year the Land cruiser was?
If anyone knows what year the standard LC coils are from please post it up so Fonerunner can buy shocks.

Here's a nugget of very useful info!
If you have coils from the FJ80 or FJZ80 and you want rancho shocks...the part number is RS5208. Amazon.com just sold them to me for $39.04 a piece.

I'm planning to buy rancho rs5000's for the rear lift. I've got OME 891's (heavy coils). Now I need to go cheap so rancho reviews are a go.
First thing I want to know is the extension and compression of OME/Expensive shocks for lifted 4Runners and find this:Slee Off Road - OME n91 Specs
Searched the n91's because 9004 replaced them and was easier. So using that information I went on to search for Rancho RS5000 with the same extension/compression and found this chart: My4by.com Rancho rs5000 Specs
And from there got a better idea on my own what would fit the best.
Also that rancho specs website, in the URL bar, if you replace the 'rs5000' with 'rs9000xl' you get another spec list for the 9000's.
Hope this helped out some of you who search for ranchos or rs5000 in t4r.org's search engine!

Sorry it's an old thread but to answer your question, I went with the Rancho RS-5158's.
Compression:13.00"
Extension: 20.875"
Was the closest I found to the OME shock lengths, and it helped to see that those shocks are used on most older front Land Cruisers too, so decided with them.
Better late then never. Now about to order the Bilstein HD's for the front and get this thing going.

Just an FYI - Any shocks that are made to fit the rear of a 90s FJZ80 Landcruiser will work as a rear shock for a 3rd gen 4runner with a lift. Yes that's right, we borrow the front coils from the FJZ80 and stick them on the rear of our 4runners to get a lift, but the shocks are rear for both vehicles.
Bulger22, it sounds like you bought shocks for the front of a Landcruiser to stick on your rear. Unfortunately they won't work because they aren't eye to bolt so they won't install without some type of adapter.

Hmm they look exactly like any of the others I've seen online that people have used? And I didn't understand the mounting brackets listed on the site but it was the same as others have used. Guess I'll find out...but if they don't work I'll have some to sell, I've had them for a couple months and I'm talking myself out of them anyways to have Bilsteins all around.

Well, I'm 100% sure that the rear LC shocks work, but the fronts looked to have different brackets on the ends. I don't think the collapsed and extended lengths are right either. Hopefully they'll still work for ya, but I'm thinking not.

They'll be fine. Went to O'reilly's site, and looked up rancho replacement shocks for '97 4Runner, and they have the RS5187's for replacements, and on the my4x4 spec sheet, the Upper and Lower mount brackets are the same as the ones I bought. Had me freaked out their for a bit. In fact the ones I bought are barely longer than replacement ones. Same with OME, they aren't any longer than replacement shocks hardly. Maybe 3/4". You'd think they'd be about an inch or so longer than stock considering there's 2" higher?

That's weird, because all the front ones I'm seeing are bolt to bolt. Maybe it's because they use a generic picture of the brand of shock but not necessarily the exact model. It sounds like they'll work for you though so sorry if I gave you a scare. If those shocks are almost the same lengths as the stock 4runner shocks, I'm surprised they work on a FJZ80 because the rear shocks that I got (Trekmasters) were ~3" longer than the stock rear 4runner shocks. Hmm.
