Range of keyless entry??

What's the straight line-of-sight for the stock keyless entry tramitter? Incorporating a factory alarm into this same transmitter would probably have the same distance, right?

I've gotten 100 yards on mine -- farther than I can walk before the 30 second timer goes off and the truck locks again.

When my truck was new, and the batteries were fresh in my remote, I was able to get amazing range. I went for a hike up a local peak. It's about a 1500 foot climb to the top, and takes about a half hour. From the top, I could barely make out my T4R as a tiny white dot. I pressed the lock button, but I had no hope of seeing if the orange lights blinked. Then I hit the panic button, and sure enough, I could hear the horn going. Now that the battery is a bit lower, I "only" get about 100 to 200 yards of range.

I have found my 4Runner to have a lot better range than many other vehicles. I would push the lock button to see where my truck was from two large blocks away and the orange lights would flash. This was great when I was walking late at night! When the batteries started getting weaker in the remote of my 2003, I would have to hold the remote over my head and push the button down for a few seconds to make it pick up.

Increase the range

There is a trick that uses your body as an antenna plus the characteristics of these little transmitters.
Face away from the vehicle, hold the remote vertically with the top of the remote resting on and above your upper lip just below your nose.
Now try the remote, you should be suprised by a noticeable increase in signal strength especially with a weak battery.
This was explained on my S2000 site and many people including me got a positive result.

You can also just hold the remote to your chin and it works the same. It's pretty cool how that works. My wife showed me that one. I thought she was nuts, but it really does work.

Er.. if I am facing away and its a fair distance how do I know it worked?!?
