The simple way to see if it's your brake pads is to go over bumps without touching your brakes (rattles) and then go over bumps while lightly touching the brakes so the pads just contact the rotor but do not slow the car much. If there's then no rattle it's your pads.
Pads often rattle in the calipers when they've just been changed in my experience and most dealers install shims to prevent it, but some don't. However, I'd be surprised if the pads rattle on a new car.

Are you being sarcastic? That is a dumb thing to say if you are. He asked for thoughts on what his problem might be......so dont stone somebody for suggesting what it might be. If you werent being sarcastic then dont worry about it.

Good move and could well still be the brake pads, even on a new car. My 2004 SE makes random odd noises that seem to go away eventually. If I didn't ignore most of them I'd get to know my local service manager a little too well.
I just apply the common-sense test... if it gets worse over time, you might have a problem.
Then again, I owned an American SUV for many years (albeit a Jeep) which at times sounded like it was falling apart going down the road, so I probably have a high tolerance for rattles.

It's amazing to me that someone can be so sure of the source of a noise based upon a vague description like the one provided.

Amazing Internet Troubleshooter: Sure, it's your mufflers bearings. I had the same problem and replacing the muffler bearings solved it. Therefore, your problem is definitely the muffler bearings.

Rattle in 2007 4runner undercarriage
I had my tires balanced and rotated at my friendly Toyota dealer and then started noticing a rattle that sounded like it was coming from the left front drivers side. My wife and son both said when they were sitting on the passengers side that it sounded like it was coming from that side. I checked everything you can imagine to no avail. Finally I checked the wheel center caps and the one on the left front seemed a little loose so I hit it a few time with a rubber mallet. I have driven the truck approx. 100 miles now and NO RATTLE. Major headache but simple solution. Sure did about drive me crazy trying to find it . Hope this helps someone.

In all fairness, Toyota has many TSBs for updated shim designs to prevent brakepad noise. Newer brake pads often come with the shims either already installed, or an updated design. So its entirely possible that a "new" 4Runner could exhibit brake noise before the first pad change
Now then, do you know what side its coming from? Is your Skidplate on securely? Is your Skidplate dented? Do you have any mods in the suspension on your truck?

Rattle from undercarriage
Well I had a similar rattle noise coming from the drivers side front wheel. I took it in for a look and discovered my wheel bearings were fried. $1000 dollars later, now I think the other side is making noise. :frusty:
Also found out the boys over at JiffyLube didn't replace all of the bolts on the skid plate.
It's really frustrating not having my own garage to maintain my 4Runner...
2008 Xreas w/3" lift and 33" tires.
