Rattling is Driving Me Crazy!!!

I know it might be a little anal, but has anyone noticed a rattling sound coming from the front passenger side? It only happens when I am accelerating or the radio hits a certain frequency (which makes me think that it could be in the door). I have not had the speakers replaced because I wanted to avoid the risk of rattles (ironic, huh?).

I guess I am just looking for any suggestions on what to look for, possible remedies or any experiences with dealers actually fixing such things. Now that I know that d@mn noise is there, it's all I can hear in my otherwise solid truck.

I feel your pain, I have a rattle in the drivers side sun visor. If I flip it down a little so it doesn't contact the seconary visor, then it goes away.

I already fixed the rattle from the little compartment door under the radio with some felt pads and the rear seat rattle with duct tape, but I can't figure out a way to make the visor stop rattling except to keep the visor open a little , which is annoying for visibility.

4Runner is a great truck, but come on Toyota, a little more attention to detail in the rattle department would be nice.

I have to wonder if it is maybe a blown speaker... They rattle and vibrate when they start to go.

If you're complaining about the few rattles we have in our 4Runners, you have obviously never been in a GM vehicle.

Anything in the pockets on the doors? My brother left a rolled up piece of aluminum foil in there once. Everytime I accelerated or braked I heard this wierd sound. Sounds stupid, but you never know :

I have the same issue, its driving me crazy also! When my truck idles, or any vibration from another cars loud audio/bass or exhaust noise it rattles like hell. It usually happens when Im at a stop light and am braking, I can get it to go away if I release the brake and brake again, but its really really annoying! Help!

I have a similar problem but it's restricted to the driver's side door. I'm tempted to rip it apart and fix the problem, which to the best of my knowledge is caused by the speakers. Tried toning down the bass, then midrange but to no avail. Something has to be loose in there...ugh that's the only problem I have with my car.

i had the driver door rattle issue. later i was able to dup the prob just shaking the door. turned out to be a loose motor inside. it's likely caused by a careless tech when the lock solenoid was replaced during 1st month. fyi.

Shaking the door huh ? Sounds simple enough...although I'm still not sure if you mean just swinging it a few times or actually taking it off the hinges and shaking it (probably not). I had a hunch it was some stupid reason like a loose motor. I'll give it a try and see if it works. More than likely I'll bitch to the service reps at my next oil change and have them deal with it. That way I can blame them if something goes wrong.

Thanks for all of the replies to this, I wish it was a blown speaker cause that's easy to fix. Unfortunately, like someone earlier, I actually get the rattle from outside vibrations from other cars as well. I am going to try the shaking thing and I'll let you know how it turns out.

I actually owned a Blazer and a Mustang before the Runner and I could deal with the rattles....difference was I didn't pay $30,000 for either one of them. I guess I expect more from a 'Yota.

You have two choices: rip the door skin off (very easy to do) and inspect. It also helps to have one of those metal flexible arms with a magnet on the end to probe into the bottom edge of the inside door compartment. It could be a fallen washer or a piece of sound insulation missing? Or take it back to the dealer.

But do something active!

I have had rattles from my drivers side roof, and also very bad rattles from my sunroof area, and rattle from my drivers side sunvisor. In an attempt to quiet the sunroof rattle because it was the worst I sprayed the home depot expanding foam into the rear of the sunroof, about 2 full cans worth. Nothing helped. Finally broke down and sent it to the rip off dealer. First time, could not duplicate rattling, took all day to figure that one for them. 2nd time, left it with them for a week, could not fix problem and then wanted to charge me $1500 to tear off the headliner, remove the foam I sprayed in and attempt to fix the rattle. F_ _ _ing dealers and still under warranty. Needless to say, all rattles exist and it drives me nuts. The sunroof was the worst but with all the changing weather, I have not opened or closed the sunroof in a month or two and the rattling has stopped. This means I have a sunroof in which I will no longer use except to open the sun shade and let light in. Final opinion, I paid $43,000 for my limited and to have this problem and I will not buy another Toyota because of this. It angered me that when I went to the dealer, everyone from the service manager to the toyota shuttle driver knows about the damm rattling in the 4runner sunroofs, yet they did nothing. Nissans might be looking pretty good in the future. This 4runner was my first and will be my last as my first impressions are a lasting one!

I may get stoned for this post, but here is my $.02. You guys are being silly. My sunroof rattles and I occasionally get a buzz out of my front door speakers and I find it annoying. There....I said it. But I certainly dont dislike the vehicle becuase of these minor annoyances. You must remember that despite the carlike driving experience and impressive performace, the 4Runner is still a truck. I will guarantee that there is no other body on frame truck that you can buy for $35K that runs as flawlessly or has less annoyances than a 4Runner. I drove my mothers Cayenne today and it has a lot more rattles and annoyances than my 4Runner will ever have. My recommendation is to try and keep these little annoyances in perspective and not let them detract from the enjoyment of owning one of the most out of the box capable SUVs you can buy.
