Rattling noise lower front of engine

i have an 02 4runner that is making a rattling noise coming from the lower front engine. timing belt and water pump replaced 500 mile ago and everyting looked and fit fine. No leaks, plenty of power, shifts fine and makes the most noise at idle. any ideas would be helpful....my first time on here.

i might add the runner has 160K miles.

I also took it to a transmission shop,( thinking thats where it was coming from) and they confirmed that the transfer case and tranny are working fine and has no issues.

Two things.

First check the heat shield around the exhaust manifold. They can raddle and always rust out and crack.

2nd. Does the sound go away when you put it in drive? If so it could be cracked flex plate in the auto trans. You can remove inspection plate and listen if the sound is coming from there. Very common on these motors.

it doesn't matter what gear its in. seems like its not as loud when accelerating.

Does it rattle at only a certain RPM? Or is the rattle independent of engine RPM/load and just rattles over uneven surfaces?

I had a rattling front fender I'm buying new clips for but I knew what it was since I just repaired my antenna motor.

Coming from the lower front I would guess a/c idler pulley.

Are you sure that it is coming from the front? What you are describing sounds similar to a noise that I had. Mine turned out to be a u-joint that needed to be lubed, it took me forever to find out where that noise was coming from.

If it happened right after the timing belt, I'd look into checking the torque on the crank pulley, or any of the associated parts that are removed for that service. Crank bolts tend to work themselves loose if not torqued to the factory recommended spec.

Or it could be something as simple as a loose skid plate. Really without seeing it or hearing it, all anyone on the internet can do is throw out random guesses...

3rd Gen T4R Cabin Clunk

Last week began a noise inside the cabin to pass cobblestone street, and ripples in the pavement.
Sound of metal against metal beat. I thought to be the support of the antenna that was barely tight, but it was not .
Today I decided to research and found that when moved the engine cover near the hinges occurred a metallic noise.
So to test involved the terminals of the two hinges with a rubber hose , and went to the street with the car.
The noise disappeared ! Now I have to think of a permanent solution .

I have a 2003 4Runner and every time I start up the vehicle and put it in to drive or reverse, a slight rattling noise comes from the engine and the noise speeds up everytime I accelerate. The heatshield for the exhaust manifold is rusted away so could this be causing the noise?

Also, I bought this vehicle used and have no idea when the timing belt was replaced. I took it to a mechanic and he told me the timing belt was in good shape. Could the timing belt cause the noise too?

Might try the 4th Gen section for the 2003:becky:
