Rattly noise sunroof

Anyone else notice noise from their sunroof when the shade is pulled back?

There is an occasional rattle every minute or two at highway speeds. I can't tell if it is from the glass or the shade or inside the mechanism or roof itself. I know that it doesn't seem to make the noise when the shade is closed. My sunroof isn't leaking so it doesn't seem to be 'broken' per se, just makes an irritating sound that is keeping me from wanting to open the shade when i'm driving on the highway.

Mine rattles a bit when vented on bumpy roads. Nothing major though.

Just to clarify, it only makes the sound when the sunroof is closed but the shade is pulled back. Or at least that's the only time its audible.

Makes me wonder if it isn't just something loose in betwixt the outer and inner roof related to the shade or mechanism.

I don't dare take it to a dealer because they (a) seem to never be able to re-create a problem and (b) usually break something else.

I haven't noticed mine rattling and I drive around with it closed and the cover pushed back all the time.

Isn't it horrible that we feel this way? I took mine in for just a simple oil change yesterday and was freaking out because I knew they would do something wrong. Which they didn't, at least I didn't find it yet.

Yes it's horrible. It has nothing to do with Toyota. The problem is systemic in much of the American service industry right now. Don't know about outside of the country.

Hah! Found it. Well... maybe. They rotated the tires Thursday, we put on over 500 miles this weekend and between 50 and 70 the wheel balance is pretty pathetic. Not really the fault of the dealer who rotated, but the tire place that put the tires on the first time.

Also, I broke another wheel stud. Different wheel, same method as last time. Set the torque wrench to 83, 5 nuts got tight, one didn't, just spun right off.

My whole experience with having someone else do something to my vehicle has been an extreme strugglefest. You cannot trust anyone these days. [/rant]

I know that FJ's don't have this problem...they don't come with SUNROOF's! :biggrin2:

Mine has gotten pretty bad and now can be heard even at 40 MPH. It's also more continuous and louder.

I had a rattle about 2 to 3 weeks after purchasing the vehicle. Like others described it was intermittent at higher speeds on a rough road. At first I couldn't tell where it came from. I was able to isolate the rattle to the front metal piece on my moonroof. When I pressed on it it would stop. It did this maybe four or five times and each time pressing on the metal piece would make it stop. It has now been 3 months since I have heard it (I've owned my T4R for 5 months now).

[Sunroof rattles were attended to - the TSB was associated with a similar problem in the 2007 Camry Idea (Bulletin NV006-06; NV5012 - Adjust Moonroof Glass Mounting Tabs) Our service manager seemed familiar with the problem.]

The above was posted on the RAV4 World forum a while ago. It seems that some Toyota vehicles with a 'moonroof' are prone to rattles. Maybe the dealers are familiar with the procedures outlined in the TSB and can use the info to fix the 5th Gen.'s 'moonroof' problem as well? It's worth a shot.

Okay, after being driven nearly insane by this noise for the past 4,000 miles, I decided to pull of the highway on our most recent road trip to check the roof rack front crossbar. Yeah, it wasn't tightened all the way.

Guess what. No more rattling.

It wasn't even the sunroof making the sound, now the sound is gone, and now I'm back to being a happy camper (literally).

Yeah, mine wasn't either. I lost the screw somewhere on the road and Toyota hasn't bothered to provide a part number for replacement.

Rattle in sunroof

I've noticed my sunroof in my '06 has recently started to rattle when closed. If I vent it, or open it rearward, the rattle goes away. It gets muted a little when I pull the sun shade forward, but it is still there. If I push up on the glass with it shut, I can move the glass upward a good 3/16" on both driver and passenger sides, and this replicates the rattle sound I hear driving down the road. I wonder if there is some way to add a thin strip of plastic / rubber into the track that that would dampen this sound. Also, I have read on these forums elsewhere something about adjusting the cables that make the glass panel move. Wonder if something there just needs tightening / re-tensioning. Anyway, will keep trawling until I can find some relief! I did also have loose knobs on the roof rack making a maddening vibration sound. Tried tightening them up, and that helped a lot, but some of the buzz was still there. Since I never carry anything on the roof anyway, I simply (or not so simply) removed both cross-bars and have them stored in my shop should the need for them ever arise, and near silence in the cabin save for the sunroof rattle and that irritating little buzz coming from the passenger-side sun visor. Still haven't found a fix for it either. I'm thinking about a temporary fix for the sunroof by stuffing some foam insulation blocks on either side of the sunroof to dampen the motion. Ridiculous that you can't just order the seal for the sunroof without having to replace the entire panel - I was thinking a nice new seal might be tight enough to stop the rattling.
