Rav4 engine

My fiancé and I are looking to move to the mountains and having lived in this area befor I know her beetle wont be much good in the snow on the hills so I started looking for a small awd suv and found a rav4 wih a bad engine (oil starved) with a good body and a 5 Speed. I know that the 22er 4runner has alot of suport for tdi swaps and was thinking that if the bolt patern was the same I might try that for fuel economy and power as I'm looking at a 1.9 in my 4runner and the 1.6 was enough to pull the suzki samurai swaps I have seen. So I guess my question is if the 3S-FE shares a bellhousing with the 22re.

Not sure if it does or not. You might want to check and see if the bellhousing is removeable from your rav4 trans. I know the bellhousing is removable from the 4runner trans. So you maybe able to just swap bellhousings. Couldn't hurt to check

another thing you can consider that has a better awd system is the Subaru forester's.

remember the rav4 is a FWD vehicle until the wheels slips, whereas the Subaru are a more true awd system (depending on model)

The Subaru has better AWD for sure. The Subaru also has a motor that can't go 50k without blowing a head gasket. Stick with the RAV.

I have owned a cople of subaru legacys over the years and the big thing I saw in them was failing reverce gears in the auto, my car in highschool was a 91 with a 2.5 and a 5 Speed finally scraped it at just over 300k. Problem was that it high centered on every snow mound I came across

To answer this question, the answer is no. The 3S mounts sideways, like a FWD car, with the associated one piece trans/front diff. To put in a 22RE you'd need to completely rework the engine bay - the 22RE is longer and taller than the 3s, so you'd probably have some firewall and/or core support modifications to make. Then you'd need to fab the floorboard to make room for a transmission (W56 or whatever), and have a custom driveshaft built to the rear pumpkin. Then you'd have to figure out how to fit a front diff under the engine, how to mount it, and have custom CVs made to make that diff work with the front wheels.

Thanks that's what I was looking for I was having trouble finding info on the enging oriantarion and bolt pattern so I thought I would put it up to the toyota folks here see if any one knew
