Aluminum won't rust while steel will. People with steel will typically paint a few coats of rustolium to help reduce the rust issues. I went steel because I plan on taking hits and want something that can handle the abuse long term. Yes, the steel will require some maintenance but I'd prefer that over having to replace aluminum skids.

Aluminum is half the weight but once cracked is done.

Steel is heavier but will take some serious abuse.

The opinion of some guys I know that wheel a lot of expo and parks is that either need some gussets and bracing in order to really make the skids hold up. I am going aluminum and going to have some bracing welded in asap.

So if you break the Aluminum why can't you have it welded back together then reinforced??

At a point aluminum becomes brittle and does not repair the same as steel. Even steel does not repair to the same strength as it originally was but it is still strong. I use steel on my dedicated trail rig that I fully intend to beat on. This aluminum is going on my daily driver/ camping rig that is going to get treated a lot nicer.
