The 4WD will be a little slower and use a bit more gas due to the additional losses of permamnent 4WD and the extra weight. It will also be marginally more exopensive to maintain over the life of the vehicle.
The pros of the 4WD is the additional traction offered by the 4wd system. The resale will also be a lot better.
As i have said in another thread, I have heard lots of people who bought 2wd say they wish they had gotten 4wd. I have never heard anybody with 4wd say they wish they had 2wd.

Do you require traction where you live? Will you be going off-road, drive in rain, on snow, over mud, climb steep hills, tow a heavy load while in these driving conditions? If yes to any of these things, get the 4wd.
If you live where it doesn't do any of these things weather wise, get the 2wd, save some money on the price difference.
The differences between mileage and how quick the 2wd vs 4wd is are meaningless. Almost no differences.

I plan to use the car primarily for highway use ... occasionally haul heavy items (1x month), and have no plans for off-roading).
I'm looking at the 2WD V-8 SE as the dealer has made me a very compelling offer on an brand new 04 model.

How would i know the difference if a v8 is awd or 2wd? Would it have to have the selector switch next to the steering wheel? Also how come some v8s have the selector switch and some dont?

All the 4wd v8s have the transfer case knob to the right of the ignition. If it doesn't have that then it's a 2wd

Well, Welcome to T4R. Its a good place with lots of info. Old and new lol. V8's only came in full time 4wd or 2wd. Not like the v6 with the selectable transfer case. A V8 2wd 4runner seems unnecessary though. I never have traction issues in rain or snow. I have the full time 4wd
