Re-assembling Front Suspension with Tundra...

So I picked up some stock front Tundra coils and shocks this weekend (yes, the coils are Y/Y and Y/B) and will be headed later this week to pick up new Blistein adj. 5100 shocks to pair with them. I'm also going to be ordering new Tundra "rubber coil isolators".

I'm going to take all these parts to a local shop and have them re-assemble them using the new Blisteins, but I want to make sure I have all the parts I need to do so and make them fit on my 4Runner. For those that have gone this route, is there anything else I'll need other than the parts listed above?


Second question: Any toytec reps have a promo code I could use when I come buy some new shocks and other parts from ya? :D

Thanks, Techno. So the top plates on the Tundra shocks/coils I got this weekend won't work, huh. I was hoping to get them assembled without taking my current setup out, and then just swap them when I was ready. Any other parts from my current suspension I'll need, or is the top plates the only thing?
 
Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. Didn't realize the tundra stuff was still assembled with top plates. The Tundra and 4Runner top plates are the same so you are good to go.

No, I think you do need to use the 4runner top hats. I know there was a side by side comparison in one thread here. I think the diameter of the 3 mounting studs is different.
 
Well, I'm certainly making this thread a lot longer than it needs to be.:bash:

I checked the oem part numbers for Tundra and 4Runner and they are different.
 
Thanks for the information and ,clarificaition. I may just purchase some of the top pieces/parts then so I can swap everything out easily. That way the old front suspension will still be intact when I go to sell it :) If Toytec carries those parts I will probably just pick them up from them when I go to pick up the other parts.

You should ask around here. I picked up a set of top hats for free from a guy here. There should be someone who is planning on disposing of their stock suspension that can sell them to you for much lass than the dealer (they are expensive at the dealer).
 
2X on what Nelson said...try to get some used if possible...much cheaper! I personally just dissassembled them both and swapped out the parts. It's alot cheaper to do it yourself than pay someone to. I'm nowhere near a mechanic, and was able to do so....you just gotta take your time, and do it! Alot of folks outsource suspension work, because they think it's too hard. I'm living proof, it's not as hard as it looks. You just need the right tools, and some good instruction. I got most of my instruction from this site, and some from the 4Runner Haynes repair manual I bought!

Yep the top mounts are not cheap. Dealer MSRP on them is like 75 a piece. We sell them for $100 for both sides with new bushings too. When you come in, just mention that you are a member of T4R and you will get the discount :D. You will most likely talk to me anyway as i am the guy that is up front.

Thanks again for all the input! I've been wanting this lift for so long now and want to make sure it's done right, so I really appreciate everyone's help. Although it seems since I got my refund I've been busier with other things in my life so I haven't had as much time to pick up all the pieces! Of course this only makes me want to find quicker ways of getting that lift in sooner.

Resurrected: Tundra Strut/Coil Assembly

Id like to have someone assemble my tundra coil/5100 struts and then id install um myself. Then go back to have the shop align the truck once everythings complete.

Do i have to pull the 4runner coil/strut assemblies for parts to assemble the tundra/5100 assemblies? What 4runner assembly parts need to go on the tundra/5100 assembly?
 
You need the Tundra spring isolators (a rubber mold/bushing that goes between the top of the coils and the top plate. It holds the coils in place) and the top plates from your 4Runner. So, yes you will need to disassemble your stock 4Runner coils to get the top plates off unless you have a spare set lying around.
 
I just learned in another thread that you can run the Tundra TRD coils with 4Runmer shocks. Anyone else done this? I ask because I just bought Bilsteins and installed them about 1500 miles ago. Kind of wishing I had gone taller so I'm thinking about Tundra TRD coils and the shortest (I think they're 7.5 wrap) LC springs. I don't want to but shocks again though. If the LC coils will be too big for my rear shocks I'll probably just go OME 906's instead. Thoughts?

Me. They had zero issues. I used all of my stock parts and (other than new 4runner spec shocks) mounted the TRD coils.

Thanks. Couldn't remember who told me and I was too distracted by the Penn State game to search. What set up did you run in the back while you had the Tundra TRD coils up front? And size tires did you run?
