Re geared 2005 v6 to 4.56.

So I ordered a 4.56 Nitro re-gear kit from East Coast Gear Supply for a little over a thousand dollars, pulled both diffs and had a shop build them. It is definitely a difference. I am running 285/70/17 and it was not terrible with stock gears but I shattered the rear end (broke 5 teeth off ring gear) so I figured I might as well re-gear.

1: I noticed right away it pulls harder in low end power. Just letting off the brake in drive, there is a major difference.
2: It requires less power to overcome hills and does not downshift as often. I drive a 5.7 tundra every now and then and the 4runner feels more powerful in the bottom now.
3. High speeds require more Rpm's. At 65 mph I was running a little over 2,000 rpms, which is about 350 rpms higher than required before at the same speed.
4. 4low feels multiplied. I tried 4low just down the street and just tapping the gas will jerk the entire truck.

After the break in period I will hook up to my 22 foot boat and report back!

Cheers

at that gear set you will loose a lot of highway mph and a higher fuel consumption due to the higher RPM. if all you do is city driving and off road then you are all set.

Yeah, it goes way down! :crybaby:

just make the tires bigger, balances it out. :hiding:

looking at the rpms of doing a regear to 4.56 with my 35s would be a perfect combo, puts it ~200-250 rpm over stock at speed. 4.56s and 33's is just a tad to deep for highway use for most people. hopefully with the new tacomas having 4.30 ratios as a factory option will bring an aftermarket 4.30 front clampshell R&P for a better gearing option for everyone on 33s.

Would this be for the v6 or v8? Would the v8 need a smaller ratio compared to the v6 for the same results due to the differences in stock gearing and stock torque? Or would you gear them the same?

i would gear the v6 and v8 the same. the only time i would gear the v6 differently is for the pre-2005 ones that still had the 4speed carried over from the 3rd gen. 35s & 4.56s ups the rpms about 200 over stock. which is needed to help compensate for the much heavier rotating mass and increase in unsprung weight.

Just got my front and rear Nitro 4.56s from ECGS yesterday for my 06 V6. Need to get them in before I put my 285/75/17 KM2s on.

Little bummed when I found out I have to cut/grind/deburr the new gears before install but it will be worth it.
