re-keying a lock

hey guys! and so we come to another chapter of the saga that is my $300 runner hehe. So when I bought her the back window didnt work. I opened up the tailgate to find some one had removed the motor! no wonder the window slides up and down freely :bash: so anyways I have picked up a new used motor complete with regulator, I plan on installing it tomorrow...so my question is 1 : I dont have a rear wiper at the moment, I know theres some kind of interrupt linked to it for if the wiper is not in the off position the window wont go up or down seeing as i dont have wiper is this going to present a problem? the motor doesnt go when i flip the switch motor looks brand new though Im wondering if there is anyway to disable the failsafe that stops the window?so it works regardless of wiper position? my second question is : my tailgate does not have the original lock so I dont have a key for it Ive seen articles on re-keying the lock but I cant seem to find any right now, does anyone know where to find a good write up on re-keying toyota locks?

I can speak to the key issue. You'll have to get a new cylinder which will come with a new key. It is merely a matter of gaining access to the rear motor area (which you should already have done), disconnecting the connector, then pulling off the spring-loaded clip holding it on. This is the cheaper way to go and would require you to have two keys to your vehicle. The more expensive way would be to buy matched key cylinders and change out all of them (4 to include the ignition); personally I would go the first route and be done in less than 30 minutes. You can always mark the back-window key with a paint marker to quickly distinguish it from the other. Check out a junkyard, most of the vehicles still have the keys in the ignition, just pull the key and the rear cylinder and your done!

your right it probably would be easier to just find one with the key I will look around, but what I meant by re-keying was taking the lock/cyl. i already have and re-order the pins in it to fit the key i already have, Ive seen this done before and actually didnt look to difficult...

ps i was reading that other thread about seafoaming the intake? lemme know how it goes, I may be interested in doing the same to mine although I seem to have decent power, if i pop the clutch in first it does a pretty wicked burnout nothing breathtaking but i dont see how people can say the 3.0 has no more power than the 22re lol it definitely does, particularly in the torque dept. If Im not mistaken it has around the same amount of torque as fords 302 5.0L (180)

ok so I tried installing the new reg and motor today...doesnt work, can I assume the tailgate needs to be shut for the motor to work?
 
sorry i know its kinda obvious, its just this thing has never worked so i dont know much about it

I often close the drivers side latch with a screwdriver to simulate the window being closed to test it. This is where the kill switch is.

As for they key, there is apparently a very small number of different keys for these trucks. You might find a match from someone else. I found one for sale in a parking lot here and my key opened the door...
 
that's comforting...LOL but thanks Ive actually got a few different keys about I will try the others...

Good to know...I'll grab the one out of the local junk yard and see if it works in my back window. For some reason my ignition key will not open it even thought it appears to be stock. The key looks new so it may not have been cut correctly. The drivers door takes a bit of wiggling to get it to open too.

Anyone have a set of locks/key fro doors and back window?
