Re-painting the rear spoiler

The rear spoiler/wind deflector on my 2000 4Runner banged up against the bottom of my garage door and ended up with some scratches. I want to re-paint the thing but am unsure about the best way to do this.

Should I sand, prime and paint or can I just paint right over the existing paint? Should I be using an automotive paint like Dupli-Color or could I get away from any flat back spray paint from the hardware store? I want to make sure it stays on and doesn't fade or wash off with the sun/rain.

I would rough up the whole surface with some sand paper first to make sure the primer can adhere to it well. Then sand the section that got scratched a little more to make sure the surface is level. Third, spray a few layers of primer. Let them dry and then sand any uneven areas to make them level. Finally spray the top coat of paint.

I have had best luck with Rust-Olium spray paint. However if you really don't want it to fade, you might need to add a clear coat layer on top of the top coat of paint. Since this spoiler sees a lot of sun its prone to fade.
 
I sanded the entire thing, focusing on the spot where I had a chip. Primed it 2x, just to make sure it all looked even. Then I applied 3 coats of Krylon Fusion in Satin Black. No top coat. Its the same paint that I used on my flares, so everything matches. It has a little more sheen than stock, but I like how it turned out.

How long ago did you do this and how's it holding up without the clear coat?
 
Mine was looking tired so I used a scotch brite pad and acetone and scrubbed the entire surface front and back. Then 1 coat of self etching primer, 2 coats of automotive black and 2 coats of automotive clear (duplicolor). The clear is gloss but looks like satin once applied. If you want full gloss you have to buff it out. Looks great now and is holdind up well. The clear protects the color from the sun.

Automotive paints are usually more resistant to environmental damage and chemicals.

I did mine the lazy way and its holding up great. I cleaned it with soap/water. Then just sprayed a couple coats of plasti dip over it, and a couple coats of satin black paint on top of that then a clear and its good to go. No prep work needed besides just a quick wash and its holding up great after a little over 6 months
 
Why plasti-dip? It's not like you'd want to remove it from the spoiler.


I did mine the simple way also and just scuffed the whole surface,cleaned it and then painted a few coats of satin black over it and included painting the screw heads so they don't stand out. It's holding up great after two full winters.
 
I repainted mine along with the wiper arms ... I just scuffed it up with 180 then 220 and sprayed rustolium gloss black in like 5 thin coats came out really nice I would suggest that
 
Mine wasn't scratched but looked like crap so I took it off and just sprayed it with Dulpli-color Flat Black paint about 2 years ago now and still looks good. If you have scratches, then I would take it off and sand it prime it and then spray it.
 
Powder coated mine along with the roof rack and trailer hitch. I'm really happy with the results. Went with a gloss black.

pics of this, I had this thought, but wasn't sure if it would be worth it. How much did that run you?
 
I haven't seen anybody mention SEM Trim Black paint yet. Best automotive paint I have ever encountered. I learned about it from COB and Brianemc2. It costs more, around 14$ a can, but the finished results are worth the expense. I had my wheels professionally powder-coated, then painted the rest of my exterior with SEM and people ask me all the time if I powder-coated my entire truck. I painted my trim roughly 2 months ago, so I can't comment on longevity, only appearance. COB or Brianemc2 might be able to answer questions regarding longevity. Good luck!

Give me a few days on the pics as I'm out of town this week. I'm stuck driving a company car - man do I miss the 4RUNNER!

I'll double check the pricing when I'm back, but I believe it was less than $150 for the lot.
