Word is that Toyota will not release the V8 in the 4Runner. Partly because with the addition of VVTi on the exhaust side, they were able to boost the power numbers to beyond that of the V8 used in the 4th gen.
You must also realize that producing more V8s, their numbers as an auto maker for fuel efficiency will be reduced.
In short, don't hold your breath.

I'm well aware of the CAFE standards. To paraphrase Bob Lutz, the CAFE standards make about as much sense as trying to cure obesity by mandating that clothing manufacturers only make clothes in size small.
The way to raise the average fleet economy is to increase the price of fuel (as shown most effectively by the recent $4/gallon price spike).
