Ready to hit the Toytec Order Button...Final ?

So looking at 881 no spacer and 891s (the source of the question) and diff drop.

I want:
Lift: 2.5-3"

Tires: Would like to be able to fit 285's, but I couldnt use my light bar with a body lift and 285's from what I hear wont work with the kit I'm getting...so just 265/75s

Stance: 1" or so rake (hence the no spacers up front) when unloaded and still raking or level when loaded.

My load will be: My trailer hitch with bike rack and bikes, camping gear for 1-3 days for 2-5 people.

Ride Quality: I want my truck to ride like a truck. Girlfriend understands it will be a firmer ride and is fine with it.

are 891's in the rear the right choice?

891s do have more lift but...

Politely I will say that the 891s will be too stiff. I had 891s and loved em for a bit, but soon every pothole grew tedious. If you run with 500 lbs all the time in the butt end, they will be great. If you do not- they get too jouncy again subject to my tastes. My 891s rode great when I had a load of gravel in the back-and that was one of the factors when I got them. But I haul gravel only a few days each year to replenish my driveway.

The 890 is a good compromise spring for the back end. My rake is not as severe as it was with the 891s. When I load the 890s with 500 lbs of gravel they still ride fine, but they do set down a bit lower than the 891s did.

Others run the 891s all the time and love them. Everyone's butt feel behind the wheel is a bit different.

Just telling you of my experience with them. I was quite fortunate that fellow member CSL wanted to move up from 890s and took my 891s and gave me his 890s. Then eventually he went to Landcruiser springs for his butt end.
If you are looking for good lift, some rake, and good ride I would point you to L/C springs which I believe come in 8 and 9 wrap variations and are not that difficult to find.

Read up on the Sonoran Steel website for more info on OME springs.

Picture is when my lift was first installed with 881s and 891s. I did like the stinkbug look and now I sit more level with the 890s in back.

Much appreciated Ron! I wish I could test drive the 891's. Anyone local to SD with that set-up? I also liked the idea of getting everything together once and the same "type" of things instead of mixing and matching lift components. I'm just weird like that. I'm also just tired of talking about lifts and not buying one! haha

glad to help pb

I was same 'let's get it done' way sir- and when it came to final choice of rear springs I kind of thought the 891s would be a step up from 890s.

If you can get a chance to ride in a rig with them first it may save having to go through part of this decision making process all over again. I was very fortunate CSL not only wanted to trade but then did the swap for me and for him within just a few hours at my own garage.

881s and 890s are a good combo that many of us are running. If you want more lift then I would encourage to perhaps just do a body lift first, then consider how badly you want a suspension lift.

First off a body lift is less complicated and less money and less choices...Toytec sells em I do believe...

I am strongly considering a 1" body lift. okay I am going to do it-to heck with LED tails -a man's got to have more lift dagnabit.

It may give you the look and stance you desire (no rake though) and give you the room for your larger tires. Personally I think larger tires are somewhat over-rated-as the little details get overlooked. I lost the ability to run front mudflaps with 'just' 265/75/16s and as you can see my white beauty- well she misses her flaps....

check out 4crawler.com also... read up on Sonoran, wabfab and others... read and read and read some more.

Yeah, I have been saving for a long time for a suspension lift due to my tired suspension now and I want to do it right the first time. decisions decisions...

PB, you said you wanted rake? and you want something that can handle the loads you are talking about? Try the LC coils in the back, and get the coilovers for the front. forget about the OME up front that you cant adjust
and forget about OME for the back where you are gonna be shorter and more stiff...

get the LC coils! waaaaay better in my opinion..

That really sounds like the best plan with one exception...price. I was looking to spend around 850 for the entire thing with the OME kit diff drop included. So coilovers would be already around 750 and then lc coils for 100 and bilsteins for the rear at 160 or so for the 5100's, diff drop...im about 300 over budget. Not to mention brake lines and all shorts of shenanigans I might encounter along the way.

:iagree: This is exactly what I'm doing. I ordered everything, just waiting on the rears. Price doesn't bother me much because I don't want to be disappointed and then end up spending money to put it to my liking and it ends up costing me more than it would have!
I can't wait!!! :lmao:

only way LC coils cost 100$ is if you are in Canada, 50$ a pair here in Denver, right around 80$ shipped anywhere in the US thru my friend Katy ROCKI TOP AUTO

no brake lines needed... the bilsteins are your best option for the rear but not your only.. I have procomps, and they work.

Pro Comp Suspension Systems 927553 - Pro Comp ES9000 Shocks - Overview - SummitRacing.com 40$ a piece for 80$ for the set... also make sure you get the lifted application ones.. same part #

these are only 600$
ToyTec coilover kit with Bilstein 5100 shocks *Backorder* - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits

and top plates are like 25$ at O'reilly/checker

diff drop is 30

So, I figure

80 coils
80 shocks
600 coilovers
25 new top plates
30 diff drop

thats 815$ give or take a few bucks for tax here and there.

and thats the exact setup I have... if you spring more for bilstein, you are still just above budget

Well im SOLD! Honestly, thank you so much for your help. Ive been reading up on this stuff for months and there's no way I would have found all of this information without ya Duhockey. If we ever cross paths, the beer is on me. Im going to start collecting all this on Monday. Anyone in SD that can help me with compressing/installing all of this?

do the spacers front and rear go just a tad higher and get the 285's, I have the 881's in the front without spacer and have very minor rubbing. I like the raked look so I am just saving for a 1" body lift to get rid of the rub.

The rub is worse the fatter my friend is that sits in the passenger seat, LOL

Edit: I should read everyone's post before I start running my keyboard, I would have to ride on LC coils so don't take this the wrong way but, IMO the OME kit rides nice and stiff unloaded and very supportive heavily loaded with gear without sag. And I would love to see a poll on all of you who has actually adjusted the height on your adjustable coil over kit

Duhockey is right i ran the 891, great spring but you will not be happy with the height you get i have a 96 and only got 2.5 of lift i was looking for more like 3.5 so i sold my ome 891 and got a pair of LC 9 wrap coils. I still get the ability to carry more weight and they get really flexy off road and im not running a rear sway bar and dont notice any difference in body lean. though i will say is you will want to look into a new trac bar(Sonoran steel) i had to get on with the lc coils because it was like 7/16 to short it was 175 but i think i have seen some other options but steve was local and is awesome to deal with

glad to see a variety of opinions put out there

glad to see more folks chimed in-as you can see the options are somewhat endless.

I will say that I have yet to read even one negative review of Sonoran Steel products or service. Steve knows his 3rd gens. If you are looking to do it right the first time just keep saving your money a bit longer.

You can try to build a hybrid system with the pieces of several different setups that is what I did. I think generally speaking many folks like the 890s in the rear but over and above that level they step up to the L/C coils.

For shocks you can save some money but some would argue you get what you pay for.

If you're going to be a hardcore trailrunner then you may favor one setup more than a 'street friendly' setup.

If there is a lady involved in the ride along, be sure you have her input as more than one person has devised the ultimate setup and removed it weeks later as she did not like it....

best of luck making your choices and I fall back on the body lift idea first. It may give you half of what you seek to accomplish at 20% of the cost. Then if you go suspension lift later you are just that much higher up in the air so to speak. (Check garage heights if this is a consideration for you...)

I am ordering up at 4crawler.com now and Looking at Kit D with Heavy Duty hardware and the steering shift extension for a whopping $123. Your kit would likely be more if you have stock bumper and so on but still much cheaper than a suspension lift.

So many variables...so little time and money...:nicethread:

Hey, thanks again for your input, it is definitely nice to see so many people's opinions. Yeah the lady is involved, but she said shes fine with a firmer ride. And she's no dummy, she knows if I'm always itching to off road my car, I'll take her camping more! As far as a body lift goes, I just got hooked up with this defiant light bar that bolts to the frame and goes through the bumper, so my understanding from Paul the shop owner is if I want to keep the bar, getting a body lift is out of the question.

well, thats not entirely true, you can fab up something to make almost anything work! LOL its just a matter of how much you want to spend to make it work!! LOL :D

Haha point taken! But that is something I don't to deal with. I know I definitely want the 7 wrap ones (the smallest of the coils for a 3-3.5" lift) Will she be able to tell and send me the right ones? Also why did you decide on the toytec coilovers vs the $500 ones that SS sells?

good question, I got toytec cuz they are 20 min from where I live and I had no clue about Sonoran Steel when I did my first or 2nd lift.

I was learning on the fly.

also, I dont think the SS ones are adjustable the same way that the Toytec ones are,

you know that you could get the SS ones, the toytec ones or even Fabtech FTS2300K Basic Coilover Shocks | 1996-02 Toyota 4Runner

fabtech ones! SteezeMcqueen the former T4Rotm runs a pair of these

its all in preference, the toytec ones that I sent you a link for you are gonna have to assemble yourself, do the SS ones come assembled?
