Yup. The 3rd gens did get 24 valves and decent fuel injection but the wasted spark system and computer refinements of the days were just getting started toward superior fuel use. A high/low differential transfer gearing would have made all the difference.

The upside is still reliability via sound build quality. My '99 rides like a new truck still and everything is working on it. It will take several years before I break even on the cost of a vehicle half its age for just a few more mpgs, so me and my wallet will take that and be quite happy.

This isn't directed at you but if mileage is the deciding factor in your budget then you are doing something wrong. Only way gas savings would offset a car payment is if you get something like a prius or tdi that's getting 40+. Going from 15 to 18 will never offset the cost of a car payment.

I average 200-220mi on a full tank of 15gl and that's already getting close to E with the gas light on. Try not to push it anymore than that. I have a fear of being stuck in traffic causing a car pile up. lol

The 3rd Gen 4Runner has an 18 gallon tank. When your light comes on you still have 3 gallons left in the tank.

So I finally got one of these new fangled iPhone mileage apps. I was really curious going from my old geolanders (lr e) to the duratracs (lr c). When I got them I noticed my truck seemed a bit more sluggish, and I was concerned that my mileage was going to go down the toilet.

I feel like I lost about 20-30 miles a tank, but I think it's also a coincidental timing with the winter mix changeover too. I have switched to mid grade too since the prices have been so low.

Anyway, after a few weeks, here's what I have

The average is 18.9mpg, but that 21.1mpg was after an all highway trip with no stop and go rush hour traffic. I was also going 80-90 at points on i25 (moving with traffic)! Really surprised, and it's not adjusted for the tire size over stock too.
