How Your "Miles To Empty" Range Indicator Operates

I have read comments in another current thread about this 4Runner function from several members. Rather than clutter up another thread with a description I sat down last night to try to explain the logic of this device and hopefully it will help some of you new guys.

It does not work that way. This is just supposition on my part but here is how I think it works:

Your "miles to empty" readout uses an average of several (let's call it 1000) hundred miles and in conjunction with your "mpg" readout calculates an approximate miles to empty.

You can watch your "miles to empty" readout and your odometer and they will not be 1:1. Sometimes you can go several miles and your "miles to empty" remains the same. Now, if you reset your average mpg that function will reset but the miles to empty does not take the new numbers into effect except as part of an average.

I normally get about 15-17 mpg (calculated bu hand) in the winter and 20+ in the summer. My miles to empty readout kept the winter number of about 320 (full tank) miles up there well into spring. It took several weeks to creep towards 400 miles and it did not do it all at once, validating my belief that it drops a number and adds a number for a moving average. I also think the mpg readout samples about four times a minute, not constantly. Hopefully this clears things up a bit.

Now, after a road trip of a few thousand miles recently I still think this is how the "Miles to Empty" indicator operates:

-It has a preset sampling number programmed into it's function. For the sake of clarity, let's say it's 1000 samples.
-These samples take place around four times a minute. Over the course of a minute what goes into the program could be 22, 18, 14 and 20 mpg let's say.
-After it gets to 1000 samples of instant mpg, it drops the first number and adds the newest number. If my random number of 1000 is close, then that would mean about 4 hours of actual driving.

My description of operation above would explain the inconsistencies people experience. For example:

You drive around in the city for 4 hours and you have 1000 samples that average, for the sake of an easy number, 15 mpg. Your "miles to empty" indicator after fill up would be 300 miles.

Now here is where it gets fun:
You then go on a road trip, all level interstate let's say, and you average 22 mpg for the next 4 hours (at 70 mph) or 1000 samples of mpg. Even though you started at 300 miles to empty as indicated on your display you drove 280 miles and your indicator still says you have 100 miles to go before empty! How??? Why??? WTF???
Well, as your computer is working off a moving average that every minute is adding the last four numbers and dropping the first four numbers you can see that the further you go at your new mileage of 22, you are dropping the old numbers of 15 mpg you are gradually extending your range. If you watch the odometer and your miles to empty display they do not change together. Every time you fill up and you have been driving at a higher mpg than 15 you will see your range increase. If you go back to the city and drive you will see it gradually decrease. All in all though it gives you a decent guideline of how far you can go safely, meaning a range and not an absolute number. Use it for a guideline, not a law.

I used 1000 as the number of mpg samples as just an arbitrary number. I personally think the number of samples is 4000-5000 samples of mpg used in the moving average. At around 4 per minute this means you need to drive 16 hours of different type of driving before you fully purge the old data. This jibes with my last trip. All this is just supposition from me but it does seem to explain what you guys (and me) observe correct?

After 11 years of owning my 4runner I can say I only looked at the "miles to empty" indicator once or twice. Your explanation sounds good to me.
 
Mine will read 20 when the tank is quarter full for that reason, it's unnerving to drive around at 0 when you know there's still a lot of gas in the tank--and why I try to reset it or just ignore it.
 
eh, i just use the indicator that once it reachs 1/4 tank, i just put more in :)

use an android app to track all my stats since it gives me fancy charts, predictions, etc. and lets me track repair, trips (business, personal), add-on costs and whatever else i can think of.

So, pretty much it is as useless a gauge as you can get. If it isn't accurate for it's intended purpose (How many miles can I go until empty?), what's the point?

It makes more sense to just go old-school and monitor the fuel gauge.:peep:

You can study your fuel gauge all you want but it will only tell you one thing: How much gas (sorta) is in the tank. We all know that when it hits the big "E" you still have some fuel in there. The miles to empty display is fairly close, just like your gas gauge, with a safety factor built in. It tells you, based on your recent driving habits and style, how far you can go til the safety factor of a few gallons kicks in. The miles to empty display should work in CONJUNCTION with your fuel gauge. Neither is perfect but both tell you a story. It's 10:00 at night and you are going across Iowa. You look at the gauge and you have 1/2 a tank of gas. You look at your miles to empty and it says 150 miles. You are reassured you can make the next big town 100 miles away with some reserve because for the last several hours or so your driving habits say you can go 150 on that 1/2 a tank. Use both to get a better story. It's not useless it just needs to be understood, hence the explanation.
 
Great writeup as always! Should help people who wonder what happened to the 100 miles they "used to get” out of a tank. Now with a couple tanks of special winter brew in my beast, I’m not breaking 300 on the old range-o-meter. Plus, my mpg calculator isn’t as accurate as hand anyhow. I usually go by how many real miles I have driven to figure a realistic range in my head.
 
In the interest of science someone needs to monitor the miles to empty display and drive till the 4runner runs out of gas to determine how accurate it is. Any volunteers?

Anyone else's fuel gauge stop moving at 1/8th of a tank? Mine does, so it can be hard to tell how long it's been sitting on 1/8. This is when I use the miles to empty as it gives me a decent idea of what's happening.

Another thing about this gauge and the speedometer/odometer, once you mod the truck with bigger tires and or gears......they are all wrong! All 3 of them are calculated off the revolutions of a stock 31.6" tire's circumference and stock gearing as read by the ABS sensors .


Once you get bigger tires and in my case different gears then it can get way off with mine being 8% off as calculated by my 2 different GPS sources .At nearly every fill-up now mine reads 296-298 miles til empty(gauge reads 0) . My GPS tells me I actually go 325-330 miles til that gauge reads 0 . That GPS reading for mileage also comes out to over 16mpg where using the trucks odometer calculates to 14.5mpg. And when my speedometer reads 70mph I'm actually going 76-77mph . All this can be programmed into a Scangauge II to match a GPS ,which is what I use and the trucks readings with a grain of salt...........YMMV!

It's pretty accurate when fuel gets low if you apply the fudge factor. Should be about 2 gallons left when it hits zero. The low fuel light provides a reference point that hopefully makes an experiment involving running out of gas unnecessary.

This is based on the 4th gen but what's written in the 5th gen manual suggests to me it may well apply.

The 5th gen manual states that the low fuel light comes on at about 3.5 gallons left in the tank. This supports my best guess about the 4th gen. In my 4th gen the light comes on pretty reliably in the mid to low 20s of miles to go but is of course subject to extremes of recent fuel usage so can vary. So easy experimentation is available just by watching the low fuel light and noting the miles to go. The number should be pretty consistent for most people. On the rare occasions when I've run the tank past zero, the amount of fuel required for fillup did nothing but add support for the above.

Disclaimer: This kind of experimentation is probably best left for the warm season when fuel reserve is less critical.

This is really interesting and makes complete sense to me. What I didn't realize was how it messed with the speedometer. Your speedometer being off by as much as 8%; is the gearing more than the tires, or both of equal value?

Sorry officer... my speedometer is not accurate because of my larger tires and new gears, so I was really doing 35, not 45, promise! :angel:

Assuming you're on a flat ground, this is exactly what I have observed on multiple occasions...once the light comes on and I head immediately to the gas station I can get in just about 20 gal and change of fuel before the auto-stop shuts down the pump. Leave in some room for error (pump calibration, auto stop shutting down too soon, etc.) and you guess of ~3 gal left is probably pretty accurate for the 5th gen as well.

But really at this low of a fuel level, one should not be banking on knowing exactly how much is left, especially considering we get like 15mpg. This is not a sub compact where a couple gals means ~100 mile range left, lol.
