It can be done and, yes, I do believe some drilling is required. The Toyota dealer should have replacement spoilers available, but they may need to be painted to match. If that's the case, a local body shop might be a good route to try. They can paint it and install it all at once for you.

I too am about to purchase the oem spoiler with "hump". However, I had a question for the members on this site. I've read the "hump" spoiler directs the wind down, which I assume would actually lift the spoiler up. If thats the case, is there any danger of the spoiler flying off my car due to the wind pressure? Do factory equipped 4runners with the "hump" spoiler come with additional reinforcements? If so, will the dealer add this reinforcement for my 4runner when I take it in to install the spoiler? I don't quite understand how the spoiler could stay on if it is directing the wind down, which in effect, would lift the spoiler up and away from the car. I would think at the very least, it would start to come loose and could possible damage the hatch. Any help or experience would be appreciated.
Also, let's not make this a thread about which type of spoiler is better. Personally, I like the "hump" so that's why I am asking about this particular type of spoiler. The dealer also told me that they'll only warranty it for 1 year and I'm worried after that 1 year, I may run into problems. As for the other questions, I don't trust the dealers since they'll say anything to try and sell me the spoiler.

I have the factory spoiler on my T4R.
I'm not sure exactly how the mounting is secured but it's very strong.
Is it possible to have a spoiler come off due to wind pressure at high speed?
Sure... if you cane get your T4R to do more than 300 MPH! :bash:
And even at that speed it will probably still stay on. :biggrin2:
In other words... NO. Under real words conditions a properly mounted spoiler will not come off.
And the newer spoilers with the hump are in fact designed to redirect airflow down along the back window. This helps prevent any exhaust fumes from coming into the cabin if the rear window is open while driving.

SNAP315: Did you have the factory "hump" spoiler added after you bought the car or did it come factory?
When you think about the aerodynamics, its logical to think that with the downforce created by the hump spoiler, there is an upforce created on the hump spoiler, causing it to push away from the rear hatch.

The 4Runners just don't have that kind of speed.
I ordered a rear spoiler, 2 chrome replica tail lenses, also
the Aura Japan grill w/net from Jasons B`s site. I accidentally
backed into a wall at work and broke a rear lense as well as
boning the rear bumper a bit. My neighbor will be doing all
painting and installations as well as touch ups.
