Real World Test on Extending Oil Change

Attached is a real world test on Mobil 1 used for 18K miles with UOAs at each step of the way. There are some very interesting observations and theories that came up. Also take particular attention to the last paragraph; this is what I am trying to find out while documenting the whole process with lab analysis.

well good..i feel better now that i didnt change the oil for some 8000 miles and the next oil change is going to be in 10K.

I would recommend doing a UOA at 5K miles for two reasons: 1. To be sure your engine is working OK and you can safely extend the interval. 2. To have documentation to prove the oil was still good in case of some failure during warranty.

I'm only getting an UOA every 12.5K miles and the first one came up very good. The only thing I changed was, I went to the new Ea Amsoil filters (full-flow/bypass) because they proved to be the best on the market.

my driving consists of approximately 65% freeway and 35% streets, and driving just a little conservative (no hard accelleration and no hard breaking). With a new 06 4runner at ~6k miles, do you (Koz) think i can get 10k miles oil change interval? provided i would change the oil filter every 5k miles.

Absolutely with Mobil 1 or Amsoil, but I would get at least 1 UOA at 5K miles, just to protect the warranty.

I'm at 18K miles and the viscosity did go up a little but well within its range.

With me it's more about how much time your oil is in the engine with synthetic and I don't like going over a year no matter how many or few mile I put on my truck. Right now I go a bit over 9k which is about 10 months between changes with M1 syn.

I wish they would have used the re-formulated 0w-30 to see if the viscosity rise is now better. I will know on my next UOA.
