So I decided to clean my TB the other day on my 96 limited and when i took it it off there was a lot of blow back oil and carbon on the inside. i do not think that the TB has ever been cleaned and it has 180,000 miles. Does anyone think that there is a problem with any thing here or was it just that dirty after that many miles.

it's probally fine, do you have a photo?

Just clean it with TB cleaner, you can clean the MAF at the same time with MAF cleaner.

Be carful not to get too much TB cleaner in the IAC (intake air control). The IAC is the light greenish connection under the TB.

Sounds normal to me.

I think the oily stuff is engine blow by. I had it in my intake tube on my 96, but I think its somewhat normal. You might want to change (or clean) the PCV valve.

I do not have a photo should have taken on I guess but I cleaned it out and will check it later and see if it is that bad again if so I think I will put in a oil catch can and clean the PCV valve. thanks for the input

Just curious, but do you have a K&N filter on or in your intake?

The reason i ask is, i ran one of those K&N drop-ins for a couple months before upgrading my intake which still had an oiled filter. Im pretty sure it had a lot to do with gunking up my TB. I have since changed the filter and haven't had any problems since but yeah just wondering

No mine is all stock but it has over 180,000 miles on it. Ive been wanting to switch to a better air filter I do not want to use a cotton gauze filters like K&N because they really only help with performance curious what type of filter do you use now?

I noticed when I did the ISR mod that the intake "hose" and the TB were both severely gunked up. The PO ran a K&N filter that I've since removed and replaced with an OEM. I also cleaned the MAF sensor and the TB, and the high idle I was experiencing is now normal. I want to replace the PCV valve as well.

Ive got the Volant intake with their 100K mile powercore filter now. the original volant filter that it came with was a cotton/oiled filter and that thing got really nasty really quick. The Powercore one is designed way different from any cone filter ive seen. Its pretty cool IMO

Their are other aftermarket drop-in filters that fit in the stock box i dont recall who makes them but yeah in your case 180K miles prob would give you lots of build up too.

And Im not trying to make a big deal about it cause i know your just needing a drop in filter but i do like to brag about my setup lol Ive had my powercore filter on their for 2 or 3 years and my TB still looks like its just been cleaned.

I've read the ethanol in the gasoline will seriously gunk up the TB. What would normally show up in 20 to 30K miles is now present in as little as 10K
