Well, here is your problem. Depends on what you want to do. If it were a front wheel drive, then you can do a lot of stuff. As it stands, a 2wd, rear drive vehicle is going to struggle to get traction. That is why in the winter, to make it manageable, people throw some bags of sand in the back of their trucks. The weight helps PUSH the wheels on the road.
Anyway. Depends a lot on skill and the vehicle. Someone that is an awesome driver, in a 2wd, can do a lot.
That said. A 2wd is never gonna beat a 4wd in terms of ability to get traction.
FYI. 10.2 is way to high. Auction price is like 6-7k. High mileage, 2003, and 2wd.
My suggestion? Wait. There are 4wd's out there. Don't purchase something NOW because you really want a 4runner and be disappointed.
I just bought a 2004 v8 4x4 sport package with 100k for 12.4, in D.C. where prices are insane. Unless he is willing to sell for like 8k, don't do it. Not worth it. If you want 4wd, find one with 4wd. The 4runner traction control brain is smart and will make that 2wd drive as good as possible, but it will still only be a rear wheel driven 2wd vehicle. The "platform" is a 2wd SUV. It will sit higher, which is something in itself, but a 2wd explorer or jeep will give you similar clearance.
