Rear air locker

I have a 2015 sr5. i am shopping for a rear air locker. I cant find the 8.2 locker. Can someone help me clarify? Will the arb 8 inch work? Are the stock gears 3.73? Does anyone know the spline count as well?
Any suggestion on sites for purchase?

Yes the 8 inch they list as fitting on the ARB site works. The stock gears are 3.73, but seriously if go to a 4.56 it feels like how the truck was designed to be.
Here is the fit sheet from ARB for 4runners. They say until 2013 but they are all the same. Lockers are on the last page.

I thought about re gear, but its my dd and i drive on the highway 85% of the time. 45 minute commute to work and 45 minute back. i have 3 ibnch ulitimate lift and 285/70's and think the mpg at 18 now would be dropped significantly.

Hows yours?

If you're only installing a rear locker then I'd stick to stock gearing or it'll cost you another grand+ to break into the front diff. But if installing both, then at a minimum I'd at least switch out to 3.90 gears. This will give you back some (not all) of the torque you lost when you increased tire size. This has the usual effect of increasing city MPG because you don't have to press the accelerator as hard to speed up.

As of the last time I checked the only gears that fit both front and rear for the 5th gen are 3.73, 3.90 (out of the Lexus GX), 4.56, and 4.88.
 
Should be easy since ECGS has everything all properly installed. Just remove your stock 3rd and bolt up the ECGS 3rd. You will just need to plumb the air line to the diff. I ran my line down the driver side hard brake lines/frame and left enough slack, but not too much for it potentially snag or get too close to the exhaust pipe, for when the rear axle flexes.

Any do's and dont's on the install? Seems to be pretty straight forward. Suggestions?

It's not hard, just a bit awkward and heavy. Hardest part for me was cleaning off the old gasket. It was all glued and fused and took me several hours and was a huge mess. Besides that it was pretty easy.

Take the time to really think out and protect the routing of your air line. Get some heat shielding for it in the rear near the exh. I had mine on for a 1.5 years and still managed to burn up the line on a trip. I was able to trail repair (with the repair kit) and it has been good since with some heat shielding I picked up at an autoparts store.

Hard to compare, I replaced the bumper with a shrockworks and run a full length rack. I also mainly drive on mtn highways. I'm running mid 16 when I am on the hwy. RPMs have less affect on modern engines than the older ones as far as MPG change.

I re-geared to 4.56 about a month ago and have seen an approx. 1 mpg increase in city and an approx. 1 mpg decrease in highway driving. My opinion is that it was well worth it. Performance is great around town. On the highway, the cruise control actually works and speeds up to about 75 mph are easy and smooth. I just took a 500 mile round trip of interstate driving at 75 - 80 mph and got 15.5 mpg. That was fighting a 25 mph head wind both directions (a front blew in and the wind did a 180).

No regear on mine, but the TRD CAI with a K&N Air filter feels better with my 285's than my stock air box/ filter did with the stock 265's. That said, between my lift, rack light bar, air box and tires, my mpg is 15.1 mostly highway.

I am going to tackel this project as soon as the locker arrives. Thanks for the insight about the heat shield on the air line . Thats one thing i would never have taken into consideration.
Do you know what size the line is that comes with the kit? im hoping to have everything in the garge when it arrives so i dont have to run back and forth to the store

On a side note i just ordered the sso bumper and the smittybuilt 10k winch with synthetic line with the money i saved by not doing both front and back lockers and re-gearing. I dont plan to ever go bigger thatn the 285/70's so i think its a decent trade off.
 
The air line is thin.. Somewhere between 3/16 and 1/4". You only have to worry about the heat in the very rear section.

For the rest of it I just used wire loom to avoid abrasion.

You will want to zip tie it in place, but leave enough room for wheel travel...

I also suggest making sure you have a good free flowing relocated breather on your rear axle housing. The air line can have a tenancy to pump small amounts of gear oil at times. I still need to blow my rear line out about once every 6 months to keep it from blowing some oil mist out the solenoid. They can clog up if you don't do that. My front one has never had any trace of oil in the line, but the rear one seems to get a little over time.

I just installed an ARB locker on the front of my Tacoma. I ran the air line through a 1/4" rubber hose the entire way to prevent abrasion and heat damage. The biggest pain for my install was getting all of the connections on the compressor air tight. I gave up on teflon tape and ended up using Permatex thread sealant.

When I re-geared the rear of my Tacoma, I used Toyota FIPG sealant between the third member and axle housing. Good stuff. Not sure on the 5th Gen 4Runner, but when you pull the axle shafts, you may be able to keep the brake lines connected. You'll have to disconnect all of the brake line mounts along the axle housing though.

For those of you who did your own install did you just fab up a amounting bracket for the compressor? mine doesn't come with one so i was thinking of just ordering one.

If you ordered one which did you get?
