Rear Axle compatibility?

Can anyone tell me which years the rear axle will fit in an 87 without mods? Our daughter moved 300 miles away to school and the rear axle bearing went out. Mechanics quoting $750, which she doesn't have and we don't... so plan to find an axle, pull the bearings and rebuild, then take to her and install. We know the 85 is different, but not sure when they changed and for how long they will interchange. Thanks!

86-89 4runners will interchange also I believe 86-95 trucks will also fit. And I don't know what kind of mechanic you went to but that seems a lot for just an axle bearing I guess unless it tore the axle up. Pretty simple fix for anyone who can turn a few wrenches.

Thank you! I thought that was too high too (quote was for both sides, but still too high) and the axle is fine according to the tow truck driver. We have done our 85 before and it was no big deal, just trying to fix long distance is a little trickier haha!

86 to 95 4Runner axle housings are identical, 86 to 94 pickups. 84-85 4Runner and pickup housings will bolt up but be a little narrower. Not sure about previous to '84.

$750 for a wheel bearing is ridiculous. If she's anywhere near me I'll be happy to help as best I can.

Thanks, we may hit you up for a place to work if nothing else if possible. She lives in an apartment that has strict rules about doing mechanics in the parking lot, but hopefully they can get permission for us to come on a weekend and change out the bearings and seals. She is in Lewiston, Idaho. Two different "reputable" mechanics quoted her that price and told her 4runners have the most expensive rear bearings to do, what a joke! We found them for $40 - $70 and seals are super cheap. Hopefully we have a rear axle donor too, will see tonight.

yeah, it's not. I just checked to see where you were, we are Idaho. Oh well, we will get it worked out one way or another, thanks for the offer and the information! =o)

What's wrong with 4 link?

Not a thing when you go with Chaos control arms!
