Rear axle seal woes

I just spent $500:rant: just on the passenger side in August of this year and sh1ts leaking again. i told the shop to make sure they clean the differential breather and they told me there isnt one..just a breather plug.
do i have to make a breather when i extend the lines to the gas cap?

im in the same shoes as ur r right now but 90% of the time is the breather i just spend 20 bucks on the breather mod so it wont happen again now i just gotta find time to do the seal, 500 bucks? damn
 
Same boat. Changed the rear axle seal august 7th. now its leaking again. I even did the breather mod, but it started leaking again Anyway.

really frustrating. I know.
 
For that kind of money, buy a press and do it yourself!

When I changed the drivers side on the Wife's '97, I pulled the axle shaft and took it to a machine shop.
$50 to cut off & press on the new stuff I bought from Toyota.
Most expensive part of the job was the parts from Toyota.
Then I re-installed everything.
Good to go...
 
A good friend of mine is a Toyota tech. I recently bought a 99 and it needs axle seals. He informed me that all that needs to be done is replace the seals, and clean up the brakes really well. No need to replace the shoes unless they are grabbing badly. Mine is going to him next week. 60.00 complete. (2hrs labor, I already have the seals).

what exactly did the shop do? I paid $600(all Toyota parts). they changed both sides, inner and outer seals. and a new breather.

T4Rscott let us know where your guy is and we will keep him busy for a couple of years...that price is way too good to be true....I would be skeptical sir.

To answer the Original Poster's question-it sure is not a bad idea to remove the breather "plug" at the diff-add a new fitting in it's place and run a line up to your gas filler area and attach a brand new breather. The parts are less than $15.

But I would doubt that is the whole issue. Verify the part numbers on what was used. The writeup mentioned by steezemcqueen is the best source for all the axle seal parts and all the work.
 
I bought all the parts necessary that were listed in that REAR axle thread..so i took it back the the shop and now theyre ****ing saying i need a new axle and left side is now leaking and that the axle is warpe.. i call bull ****

what do yall think?

Left side meaning drivers side? If you had a recurring problem on the same side over and over then I would suspect the axle may have been damaged. If the drivers side is leaking now and never was it may have just been time for that seal to fail.

My driver side was done 3 times over the years-the first two before the revised part was used and passenger one has never failed yet. But it likely could at any time. If the breather plug was never replaced then that could be a factor contributing.

It sounds like you may need a second opinion as well. Have another member knowledgeable in such things accompany you to help ask all the right questions.

just a little update. I went to the shop they think the axle can be warped they dont know bc they did not open up the axle to see, so i think it was mechanic error so that's what happened and it continues to leak. About the left side leaking..its not just some brake fluid had seeped out but not alot. Im more worried about the right side.
 
ok the parts i replaced:
o ring 90301-88077
Bearing 90363-40020-77
2 Retainers 42423-20010
rotor, s(abs ring) 43517-35010
Ring, sh 90520-36045
seal, TY 90313-48001
and 90310-50006 which is the updated one
and today i changed the breather plug..

so what could the problem be? a warped axle??
