Rear Axle Seals Need Replacing / Parts Required

Need your opinions / experience on this project for parts?

Beside the obvious parts I need to do this job would you all suggest ordering
new bearing retainers and speed rotor's or reuse the ones that are currently
on the vehicle. It's an 02 with a 170K.

I only replaced the inner and outer seals. Fixed my leak for now. It's a good time to replace the rear diff fluid and rear brakes. If you do the rear brakes I would also replace the cylinders.

The second video is all about introducing a new special service tool but it's also another good example of how to perform all the needed press work. Read the video descriptions and also read any pinned comments from us. There's helpful information in both spots.

But seriously dude, like other have already commented, you need to do some searching first before you ask questions. These rigs are old and most topics have been discussed at some point in the past. 9 times out of 10 you'll find a forum thread(s) on the topic you need help on. If the answer you're looking for isn't there in the threads you found, then ask a question.

After watching Tim's fantastic video's on the matter of this procedure I must admit to being a bit overwhelmed with the details and procedures. I must have watched the most recent video with the new tool at least 3 times, the ABS video 2 times and Non ABS once, but could not for the life of me remember if it was necessary to replace those two parts ( speed rotor, bearing retainers ) or be able to reuse them.

Your link to one of the past threads I found after reading the other two threads as well! I added this note for the threads sake if someone new has interest in doing the repair to.

"Adam, read the video description and I describe how you can reuse the retainers by swapping their positions on the axle. The ABS gears are just a hunk of metal and as long as they aren't cut off, you can absolutely reuse them."

Brillo, as I had mentioned I have acquired this new tool from the Ebay member " donald-the-bonald " and if you are ever in need hit me up with a PM and will ship it out to you to use.

For the rest of those responding, best of luck with future Mod's and repairs on these 3Rd. Gen's they are truly worth our time and $$$ invested imo.

While you are doing this you will remove the brake lines to pull the axles out, DO NOT LET THE BRAKE MASTER PUMP TO run dry by letting the fluid to drain completely. If you do, bleeding this crazy expensive master pump is not easy.

You can reuse the ABS tone ring and the retainers. I suggest buying some silicon plugs from amazon to stop all your brake fluid from leaking out while you have the brake lines disconnected. I also recommend buying a 3rd axle seal in case you mess up during install. I went ahead and replaced my rear wheel bearings while I had it apart. Good luck!
