Rear Axle

Well after a bad week, Today I found out i have a bent rear axle. My friend noticed my rear right wheel whoboling ( i think thats how its spelled) when he was driving behind me. Took a look for myself as he took my truck and i drove his truck and sure enough it was. Went to my mechanic so he can look at it and by process of elimination, he said the rear axle is bent. I love my truck but this just bummed me out. So im turning to you guys for support. Anybody have any idea how much im looking at for a new one? Hopefully its not an arm or a leg to get it fixed.

Before you run out and get a new axle, try swapping the wheels around. If the wobble (correct spelling) stays on the right then indeed you have something bent, but if the wobble is now on the left, then its the tire/rim, which to me would be a more likely thing.

Also check for leaks from the axle seal. If the axle is bent then it's likely it also broke the seals. There may be fluid on the inside of the wheel but check the backing plate as well because it will show up there before the wheel. A dealer would charge around $1200 but that can fluctuate depending on fluid leaking and if it coated the brakes. The axle is actually pretty easy to pull out, it's the press work that eats up labor time.

Yeah my mechanic and i put it up on the lift and swaped the rear wheels and the wobble stayed on the same side. My mechanic quoted me at 650 for new parts right from the dealership and labor. There was no fluid leaking to my knowledge but then again i dont know how long i have been driving around like that. As far as the price quoted what do you guys think?

Wow I wish I got quoted a price like that! If that is parts and labor then it sounds good. Make sure you get a printout of all the parts that are being put in, it sounds too good to me. Then again the stealership I was at probably charged me for all the mistakes they knew they would make :bash:

Thats why i call him my mechanic because he does take good care of me. I always keep records when my 4runner goes into the shop because you never know when it will come in handy :D
