I have a 99 Limited. I felt compelled to write this because I just read a thread talking about noise from the brakes and there was some opposing information about how the rear brakes adjust. I've I can say with 100% certainty that they adjust when the brakes are applied and not by the E brake. I know this because I just went to Rausch Creek this weekend for some major 4x4 and really put the truck through it's paces. (by the way the truck performed unbelievably, keeping up with the 5th gen TRD PRO Runners I was with) I went through some deep, thick mud in a couple places and got some of that inside my drums mainly on the drivers side because it was missing the adjustment rubber plug in the backing plate. On my way home, I noticed a pretty low brake pedal almost immediately. I got out and checked it out thinking I ruptured a brake line or something but fluid level was good. Got home, cleaned the truck (that took hours, mud was coming out of places I didn't know mud could get into) and bled the brakes to no avail. That when I took the rear drums off and noticed how muddy the one side was. Also, noticed how easy the drum came off. I readjusted the brakes so the shoes evenly rubbed LOOSELY, against the drum, and it made ALL the difference in the world. What probably happen was I got mud or even some gravel in between the shoe and the drum and it adjusted more loose. So, if anyone has a low pedal make sure those rear brakes are adjusted properly.
