Rear Brakes locking up

yeaserday we were at the ball field and we went to leave and the rear brakes on my sons 1997 sr5 had locked up , i put in reverse and foward a few times and it freed up , this morning i went out and backed it up and started forward and they locked up again , after they freed up i would ease down the drive and press the brake petal and the rear tires would slide ,,,,,, Help Please

Could be a few different things. Is the parking brake getting stuck? Or you could have a leaking wheel cylinders or inner axle seals. But usually if you have a leak that would cause lock up when you apply the brakes. In my case when my axle seal was leaking the brakes would not grab at all on that wheel. But if they are both locking up sounds like there maybe something binding in the diff.

I say check your axle seals. They may be leaking.

Our seals leaked, but we caught it quickly. A buddy of mine had his leaking for a while before he caught it, he thought the same as you.

I thought it was his rear end or brakes, but it ended up being the diff oil leaking into the the drum brakes, causing the rear brake shoes to bind onto the drum...(he had the same thing...the rear would lock up, he'd stop, reverse, forward, and it would move again)

What is it with these Gen 3's and the rear axle seals?

Have same problem with my 99 t4r, the rear brake would lock up and the truck wont move. You need to replace your axle seal,your leaking diff oil in your drum brake. The oil in your drum would thicken so when you apply the brake , the shoe would stick to your drum and not release and will get worse if the climate gets cooler.
