Rear Bumper Alternatives

The rear bumber on my 97 SR5 Limited has gaping holes in it, the truck is used on the beach and though I washed it off after each trip everything down there is coated with rust.

There are pancake size chunks coming off the rear it's gotten bad enough that now I need to replace it for looks alone (the GF won't be seen in it and I can't blame her).

I really don't want go the OEM route, who makes a good alternative option?


Also the running boards are rusting out but I think I can find something for them.

CBI Off road, Sonoran Steel, soon Outdoor Logic, and i think Addicted Off-road is coming out with one as well. What area are you in, and what beach do you run on?
 
I live in NY but run around on Martha's Vineyard beaches. Also I use it to launch my boat in Norwalk, CT.

Thanks for the leads, any preferences as to ease of installation or are they all about the same?

Most of them require some drilling. My CBI has 16 bolts and I had to drill holes in the frame for 8 of them. It weighs a lot too, it will sag stock suspension too much so you'll need heavier duty coils in the rear. I don't know about the other brands, but most steel bumpers are pretty heavy.

I built a simple rear bumper I am extremely happy with for 35$.

If you want to put a few $$ extra into one Im sure you can make a nice one.

What do you want it to do and look like?
 
Yep, I looked at some of the AM bumpers mentioned above, very nice but way too expensive and extreme for my needs. They're all specialized for rock climbing. Duhockeys $35 Special is more like it. I just need something to protect the back of the truck in case I get bumped from the rear or back into a parking meter, not to much rock crawling around the beach at Martha's Vineyard.

Duhockey, was yours just welded on or can it be bolted? Guess I won't know until I remove the existing bumper.

You know, when I posted originally I figured with the hundreds of thousands of old 4R's out there with rusting bumpers someone would have come up with a replacement for $2-300

Mine is bolted on where the trailer hitch used to go. I just got a square tube of steel, capped the ends, got a few pieces of like 3/4 inch plate and then cut them and drilled them. Props to Gerdo and Glen Yoshida who were kind enough to let me use their tools and help with the welding.

The plates were welded into an L on both sides to reinforce the strength, with the bottom of the L being the part that bolts to the frame. I think its also a pretty good start if I want to add stuff to it.
 
I built my own for under $100 in a weekend if you know hoe to weld that's the way to go. Check my build thread for pictures.

you can find people or shops that can weld up simple stuff like this for not much at all.

you might even get lucky and find a T4R member nearby to yourself that will do it just for fun/practice and a six pack.
 
I found a bumper from a 2000 sport at a junk yard and put it on my 4runner. The factory painted bumpers are painted on the back and don't rust like the chrome bumpers. I paid 200 for the bumper.
 
Yeah, I figured that. I actually did some welding 35 years ago working in my dad's shop, all simple stuff with a Miller welder. And recently I picked up a Lincoln electric machine but it's sitting in the garage, none of the supplies or room yet. I think I may have to look for a replacement at a used parts place.

Does it have the large flaress and lower door cladding? I ask because you have to get the limited or late sport rear bumper if you have a limited.
 
I can live with the front bumper corners for now but the rear has to be fixed. Or maybe just removed completely.
