Rear bumper with swing-out arm. What layout?

Hi,
A fab shop is making a rear bumper for me with a swing out arm but i have a question. What layout should i go for?

Single or double swingout arm?

Single swingout is less hassle to open the tailgate i guess. But it takes more space when 'swinged out' in eg. a parking lot.

Is there another reason why i should go for a double swintout?

My other needs are:

• license plate holder
• jerrycan holder
• spare tire carrier (max 31")

It's a plate-bumper btw. Not a tube-bumper.

The cost isn't a huge difference but i was thinking: two arms is less weight/arm when is't open.

Meh, it won't matter. I'll probably go for 1 arm.

what hinge are you using? an eighty pound spare, 40 pounds of gas plus all the steel is a lot of weight to hang off a one of the cheap trailer hub axle kits. Or are you doing a double shear style mount?

'I' am doing nothing A shop is doing it for me so i'm not worried about quality and strength. I don't think they're going to use a double shear mount.

But the project is on hold due to that corona-crisis

Looks like a stong and solid mount. I wonder how much more those hinges can carry besides a spare tire. It would be nice to mount a bike-rack onto the spare wheel.

I think how the hinge is supported will be the limiting factor. The bearings in this hinge are rated at 1000 pounds and it uses 3/4 grade 8 bolt.

I think I’ve only seen a couple swing outs for 1st and second gens. Can’t think of the companies off the top of my head.

Double swing out requires less space behind you to open them in the case you’re in a narrow parking lot or parallel parking situation. My other thought is less weight on the bearings, although there are plenty of single-swing units out there. So, probably less of an issue.

Thos are the exact 2 advantages i was thinking about. But we don't use the 4runner to go shopping or as a daily driver. Well, it is out daily driver but we dont drive it much... So the disadvantage to open two arms takes the upper hand,... maybe... hwell:

This conversation has made me realize that my single swing out won’t clear my trailer when it’s attached. One reason I wanted a single swing was to place all the weight of the tire in the middle of the vehicle rather than off to one side or the other. I’ll have to re-think this.

Adam @4xinnovations makes some great stuff. I had his sliders and transfer case mounts on my 81 Trekker. Even after 10 years the mounts are still in great shape.

Also true. It would match a 80s series better for example. I like the 4runner for it's subtlety and i don't have plans to make it a full-accessory overlander.

The semi-lockdown is over next week so the shop will be open again. I will update with pics soon.
