Rear Cargo Door auto latching device.

Has anyone had problems with their rear cargo doors,auto latching devices?
Mine seems to work fine,I just know it would be a real costly repair if needed.

Yes people have had problems, but it doesn't seem too widespread. My latch acts weird sometimes, it pulls the hatch shut and then pauses and I don't think it's going to finish closing but then it cycles pushes the hatch to its proper position and latches.

Some people's issue is rust related, caused by water infiltration into the hatch.

And it is pricey to replace. I wish it didn't have the feature to be honest.

I agree it is one item I could do without,I don't open mine often but when I do I wonder is it going to lock or not lock.
 
I have to be honest, if I could delete two things from the 4th gen it would be the stupid 4wd dial (I want a real lever) and the "soft close" liftgate.

The biggest problem with the liftgate is not me, it's other people. People who don't know it's a soft close are forever slamming it. I've gotten to the point where I simply say "leave it up. I'll close it."

There should be a big warning in large white letters on the bottom of the liftgae that says "DON'T SLAM IT!" :rolleyes:

Actually, if I was King of the Universe I'd have a two piece tailgate like the 100 series LC. Yes, I would give up the roll down rear window in exchange for a tailgate to sit on or to use as a shelf while camping.

I am lucky as no one besides me uses, or has anything to do with my 4runner.
Even the wife does not want to deal with it,the alarm went off once and she did not understand what she did or how to shut it off. So she will not drive it.

My mom has a 4th gen, and the feature that annoys me is how it automatically locks all the doors when you use the key to roll up the rear window. 99% of the time I'm not ready to lock the doors when I roll it up.

Thanks for pointing that item out.
As I have never had the rear window down,I did not know about the locking all doors detail.

I have noticed that sometimes it will just lock all doors,have no idea why this will happen.
 
Yup, I had to have mine replaced due to water intrusion. It's super easy to get at and remove, but the motor/mechanism is stupidly expensive. Mine was covered under a dealer warranty, think the total bill was over $500....

WoW!! that is a bunch of cash. My Nissan Maxima had water get to the electronic idle control,cost of the little unit was $600US.
 
I had a little trouble with my former 04... Had to spray cleaner like WD40, etc, kinda rinse/wash that mechanism out. Then sprayed with whatever type of lube I had on hand. It was just somewhat gunked up with caked up dust, etc.
That woke it up and all was well right away. Probably something I should from time to time with other maintenance.

Maybe that explains why the alarm sounds and my horn blows when I insert my key into the tailgate- damn aftermarket alarm!

When the wife first tried driving the new 4runner,for some unknown reason the alarm went off. That was the first and the last time she ever wanted to drive it.
