Rear cargo mat

I just purchased a rear cargo mat that fits the entire rear section with the seats folded down, it was for a 96 tacoma. It only needed a little trimming on one side, and a little on the front, but fits pretty good. The problem I have is the smell, the "new tire" smell is overwhelming, i've got a headache after 5 min. Is there a way I can reduce it? I thought about leaving it out in the sun for a week, but I haven't seen the sun here in a month. I am uneasy about any chemical, don't want to see pre-mature cracking, although I really don't care how it looks, it's there to keep the dog off of the carpet.

You could try washing it with a laundry detergent??? I find that takes smells out of alot of things.....

Ted, have you found anything to take care of the smell? I am looking into getting one soon, so any insight would be helpful

Automotive febreeze. That should fix your issue, or you can put some baking soda and sprinkle it there. Let it sit overnight, then vac it out.
