Rear Carpet Backing Peeling Off and Staining Carpet Underneath

Has anyone had an issue with the black backing on the underside of the rear cargo carpet peeling off and staining the carpet underneath? I had a 2006 that this happened with and now I have a 2004 with the same thing happening. I don't know if it's the Arizona climate or if this is a common issue. The image is of the carpet in my 2004 which appears to have gotten wet at some time (I bought it used). I don't think this is the cause since I don't remember the rear carpet in my 2006 ever getting wet...but I suppose anything is possible.

Ultimately, I am looking for a fix to keep the backing from peeling off because the permanent carpet underneath ends up getting stained black. Best thing I can think of is to cover the entire back of the carpet with Gorilla tape but I am afraid of that eventually getting gooey like duct tape does after a while, especially when the inside of my truck gets to 120-130+ during the summer here in AZ. I am open to any suggestions y'all may have.

Additionally, I would love to know if I am the only one this has ever happened to because I couldn't find anything online regarding this issue.

The backing just drys out over time, and your heat doesn't help.
See if you can find something that will spray on and bind it together. Maybe some kind of sealant.

Thanks for the response fourwd1. Sealing the back of the carpet is what I assumed that I would end up doing, I just don't know what would be best to use and wouldn't end up being an even bigger mess down the road. The only thing I can think of is to use Gorilla Tape. I'm really hoping someone on here can tell me what type of product would be best to seal it, cover it, whatever because it's nearly impossible for me to get an answer by going into any stores around here and asking. If I go into my local hardware or auto store and describe the issue and ask what I should use, I get one of two different responses (I guess I even get both at times)...

1) They treat me like I'm a dumb blonde that doesn't know a car from a bicycle then ask me why my boyfriend or husband doesn't take care of it, or

2) They act as if they just graduated with a "carpet sealing" degree but what they are saying to me doesn't make any sense because they really don't know anything about it but they want to sound smart. After all, I'm just a dumb blonde at that point so how could I ever think what they are suggesting is not only not going to help but would also cause more damage....lol!

Sorry to rattle on...it's just a pet peeve of mine that I have to go to the internet to get reliable answers about my truck, my car and anything else mechanical or technical. I forget that the stereotype is there until I need to get something done and can't any reliable help...grrrr!

Ok....rant done! Do you happen to know of any types of sealants I could use, based on the properties of the backing material. I would hate to randomly try different sealants in hopes of not doing more damage

maybe get rid of it and buy one of those cargo liners from weathertech or something simliar? doesn't look like that old carpet liner is salvageable.
