Rear coil airbag durability?

Hi folks, new member and first time poster in the 3rd gen section. I'm shopping for a 3rd gen to be my daily driver and serve as an off road camping vehicle for my family of three.

90% of my time is on road commuting to work. I'm looking for a setup that retains the best road compliance for my daily, but wont sag when loaded with food, water, and gear for the weekend.

I don't do very technical off roading. My state has a lot of two tracks and sand trails, so I don't need a ton of articulation.

I'm considering medium duty progressive springs in the rear, and a set of airbags. Idea being I could add a bit of air to fix any rear end sag when loaded down for trips.

My question(s) are, is this the best approach to accomplish my goals? Are there specific sets of airbags known to be durable for some mild to moderate off road use?

i went the same rout. I went moog progressive springs and a set of airbags.
they are nice.
normally i have 10 - 12 psi in the bags but when i had a furnace and oil tank in tow, i went up to 25psi and it kept it level.
also when i go to cosco for food and water, i add a little bit of air. it works well.
 
I have a set of bags in the 1/2 ton work truck, 40-50psi all the time. I would hate to drive that truck without the bags.

Also have a set for my 4R but not yet installed

I have a set of 99 talls in the rear paired with the Air Lift air bags. I love it. I have much the same use of my 4runner as you, however it sound like I offroad a bit more. When loaded up for a camping trip I'll throw 30-40 psi in and the rig stays level and rides very nice. For empty running around town I leave about 7 psi in and the ride is great. When I offroad in areas that require good articulation I remove the needle valve from the air stem so air can be freely pushed and pulled in: I've noticed zero compromise in articulation when I do this. For your usage it sounds like the application will work great for you, good luck!
 
Thanks guys. Do you think the OME 906 is a good choice for this or would you look at something else? Not really looking for more than 2" lift from stock.

Same for me (AirLift). I run then at 5psi around town, they are plenty comfy. With a crapload of gear in the back and the bags pressurized it still rides good and doesn't bomb out.

I have 906 rear coils and they are awesome. Even with a 150-200 lb load of gear the sag is not very noticeable. My old stock coils sagged noticeably with as little as 50 lbs of gear.

My advice: Switch to 906 coils and see if you're satisfied with them. If not, then you can easily go and add air bags in. I found that I didn't need the airbags so I skipped them, which saved me money and I don't have to worry about durability issues. Who cares if my tailgate sags 1/2" a couple times a year when I actually have a heavy load in there?

Good deal. 906's aren't too rough unloaded? I always carry a small set of tools and straps, etc. Maybe 50lbs of stuff all the time.
 
I have no advice in regards to your air bag question, but just wanted to welcome a fellow Michigander to the site. Where abouts are you located?

I have the 906s with bilstien HDs. I find them to be fine empty, no complaints. Better with a bit of weight of course.
