The dome light in the rear compartment doesn't go on when the hatch is opened (and the vehicle automatically re-locks when the hatch is opened but no other door is). The bulb is okay because I can turn it off and on manually. Does anyone know where the switch or sensor is which controls the light and lock? Would it be reletively easy to fix or is it a job for the dealer?

I have the same exact problem with my 97 and no, it is not the slide toggle position. I originally thought it was a defect in mine after I took it out and cleaned it with contact cleaner but it still doesnt work. My only other thought is to find where the open/close sensor is for the hatch but I have no clue as to where it is. Can anyone help us?

I have had something weird going on with mine. It seems to be timing out, if the liftgate is open too long. That, and it also does something weird with the locks, when I roll up the rear window it seems to lock the rest of the doors. Probably something I could figure out by reading the manual, but I just thought I would mention it here.

It's probably the sensor for the hatch. It's usually by the lock mechanism near the bumper. Something's not making contact and the car doesn't know the hatch is open, thus not turning on the lights and re-locking the doors.
Luxury: Yes, it goes out after a certain time to prevent the battery from being run down, the puddle lamps do this as well. When you use the key to close the rear window, you're actually locking the car first and then rolling the window up. Otherwise, there'd be a lot of mad people wondering why their doors weren't locking when they tried to lock it using the key in the hatch. So, there's nothing wrong with your car.

if it's not, you've got a bad bulb.
