Rear Diff. Breather

Picture of around the muffler. The frame is mostly like that, patches of rust of varying degrees. no holes. Its fluid film checked back a few days ago, after a 60 days, it its still greasy, pretty sure it should hold.

I dont know why every car isn't dipped in this stuff.

edit: its really the rear end that got the worst of the rust. It did sit for a few months with lots of salt on it and moisture.

No! That is for breather extension, you need

90930-03031

i ordered from toyotaonlineparts.com because shipping was 6 dollars vs 12 dollars everywhere else wanted. I suppose you could go to dealership as well. list price is 8 dollars so cant be too bad.

OK, the part you reference is for a new breather plug. Don't I want to get the one with the nipple extension so I can hook a hose to it and vent it above the axle?

If you're trying to do the extended/relocated breather, you need the two parts I posted on the first page.

Just to throw this out there, you don't have to buy anything to thread into the differential to clamp a hose onto. You can remove the factory breather and with a small screwdriver, pick and a pair of pliers remove the top off of it. There isn't a lot sticking out, but it's enough to clamp 3/8in hose securely on to.

If that isn't good enough for you, 1/8 not is close enough to the thread size. You can get a 1/8npt fitting with barbed nipple at most hardware or parts stores.

That's exactly what I did on my Nissan Titan, which had the exact same issue. The difference on the Titan was I added an in-line filter so nothing could get back down into the differential housing and I vented it into the space behind my rear tail lights. Much better location than in the gas cap area IMO.

Here is my breather. its soaking in some ATF/acetone now. Dont have a 14mm deep socket, so don't want to risk it.

going to pick one up today or tomorrow. scrub it down then go for it

Probably would have, It was pretty lose, even though mine was full rusted.

Got scared when I saw a bunch of crap about to fall in, I used a qtip and brake clean to clean off the threads. Actually there is a little well thing so its very hard for things to fall in the diff.

One happy diff here! Thanks guys. definitely over thought this one. This is something they should just replace at every 30-60k service at dealership.

If they had just placed it a little better it would never get gunked up. I've never heard of anyone having to replace their front diff breather. Just poor placement by the engineer.

Toyota Part Deal says that part number fits a 2001, but if I search their website for the breather for a 2001 it comes up with this number "90930-03031 Breather Plug" so according to their website both fit, also a breather is a breather and most all of them have the same threads so any would fit and work IMHO even if it was for a Lexus, Camry, etc.
