The advantage only comes into play when off-roading. If/when your rear wheels get hung up in mud, or one of your wheels is in the air, the rear locker will split the power/torque evenly to both wheels forcing them to both turn, which will help you get free. Otherwise, if you don't have the rear locker engaged, your wheel with no traction will sit there spinning while the wheel with traction will do nothing (open differential).

I guess that would have been an option back then to get it.
I guess with what I have now when I click the on the fly 4wd button are all the weels locked in 4wd or is it like AWD ( traction opposite the wheel that has lost traction).
I never really understood the difference.

The diff lock also enables you to tackle obstacles in a smooth,controlled manner which w/o you can lose momentum which is important sometimes when that is the sole thing that gets you over or through a rough spot.
On-road it can play a role if you're stuck in deep snow it can assist in getting out especially if only one side is stuck but you never want to drive on a hard slick surface with it engaged since it'll just make you spin out.
