hi,newbe here and newbe to toyotas. last weekend i got a 95 4runner with 3.0 v6, auto tranny and from what ive read kinda hard to find 4.88 gear ratio in a g144 diff. and you geussed it,the rear diff. is toast (well at least the ring and pinion. i took it appart and the pinion is completly bare of teeth. in fact, you could put it in gear sitting still in 2wd or drive it in 4wd and there was no noise at all from the rear so i was hopeing it was a broken axle or something else simple. from what ive read on the net, this rear is kinda hard to find and even read you cant buy a new ring and pinion anywhere but toyota for this,im hopeing that info is outdated and another vender carries this thinner ring gear and pinion. anyone know for sure? also,do i have any other options? i have a cousin who has all kinds of toyota stuff but no axles with the 4.88 ratio. is it possible to install a 4cyl. or regular 6cyl. 3rd member in this houseing and just buy the correct ring and pinion for it? if so what all will i have to change? im assumeing axles because of the axle spline count? if so,what yr trucks, 4runners exc.has the right length axles. sorry for all the questions but i honestly know nothing about toyotas,if it was a ford i could answer about anything.i can do the work and set up the 3rd member, just need to know what will work. i need to do this on as tight of a budget as i possibley can for now,in fact i cleaned everything out real good and put it back together to run it in 4wd for now. the pinion is smooth so there wont be any more shaveings or parts getting in the diff. there isnt any weak points in the transfer case or front axle that could cause me to break stuff running in front wheel drive till i can find the parts i need is there? i dont want to break anything else and i dont have to have it right now, just want to drive it. thanks in advance for any help and ill do some searching around on here.
