Rear diff takes forever to lock

downshift

Whenever I press the button to lock the rear diff, the light flashes for a long time before it locks and the light goes steady. I’ve tried everything I can think of, going into neutral first, driving a couple MPH first, steering a bit left/right, everything. It makes sense that it should take a few seconds, or even some side to side steering, to get it to lock, but mine takes much longer than this.

Is this normal? Are there any tricks to get it to lock quicker?

Hmm I noticed mine engaged a bit easier after a few different engagements.

Reminds me tho to go exercize my 4WD. Good "chore" for my first day off on staycation today :D

First time I tried to engage mine (last Friday, actually). It wouldn't lock, to the point I gave up and pulled out the manual to reread that section. I was positive I was doing it right and tried again. Eventually I felt it click and the light stayed steady on. I could definitely feel it was locked too, it's very noticeable if you turn at all.

It unlocked right away, and the 2nd time was much quicker, but not instant for sure. I'll be curious to see if it gets better with use.

It will. And, for what it's worth, it always locks up faster on the trail than when just playing around with it.

Interesting, so it needs some sort of "break-in" before it will lock faster. I'll make a point of using it more, it's not like I need rear diff lock very often.

I cycle mine in the driveway, just don't move very far. After it engages, usually after a slight turn, it clicks in. I stop and hit the switch a few times to make it engage and disengage. You can hear a click sound.

It will have an easier time locking if there is a 'speed' (rotational) difference from left to right. It's best to come to a stop. Push the lock button (presuming you're already in 4-low). Drive forward or backwards and make a slight turn. If you're in a ditch, one wheel will generally be spinning faster than another anyway which will allow it to lock up. Basically the internal cogs are trying to align so they can engage.

If you are engaging it in the type of situation you probably need it, there is a good chance you are on an incline where the drive train is holding you in place under load. I usually shift into neutral and roll a bit under gravity power to get the locker to engage quicker.
