i have a 90 4unner v6 5 speed. noticed when i started driving today i heard a pretty loud whining sound i thought it was my tranny. on the highway coming home started sounding alot worse couple miles after that it was like i slammed on my breaks and i skidded to a stop. would not move in any gear sounded like alot of stress on the axle so i stopped. eventually had to have someone pull me off to the side of the road and my rear wheels were not moving no matter what. think this is my differential locking up and what should i do to repair? get a new axle? differential kits?

I would find it strange to have gnashed the R&P together or the side/spider gears. My bet is you cooked your bearings.

Sometimes the crush sleeve wears out and the pinion will go mash right into the ring and carrier.

Pull it apart, see what broken replace.....my guess is youll be looking for a new 3rd at the minimum.

Something in your diff is trashed. Could be the ring/pinion gears, or a bearing, etc. You can start by checking the diff oil for metal pieces, that's a clue.
Either way, locating a used diff with the same gear ratio is probably the cheapest and easiest way to go.

what kind of prices do you think im looking at? it sounded like a lot of metal breaking when it happened. think its possible i snapped the axle? after it happened i was trying to get it farther off the road because i was on a busy highway but moving it seemed like it was making it worse. if i drop the axle i should be able to roll it right?

Pull the diff and find out what's wrong.
A used diff with 4.10 gears (the most common ratio) goes for $50 or so.
Other ratios go for more.
BTW, had the same thing happen to me once, the R+P were trashed.
