Two years ago my 05 started making noises and I was told I had to replace my rear differential. At that time the Toyota service advisor told me to drive it till it dropped. Not knowing much about it I have just kept driving. Then as the noise got worse I started asking questions and got 2 different assessments and they all came to the same conclusion. Though everyone was very surprised that a 4 runner that was only 8 years old had to have a rear differential replaced. Has anyone had similar bad luck? Does this sound out of the ordinary? I have talked to my Toyota Dealership but they are basically ignoring me.

Jennie, first let me say, WELCOME TO OUR CLUB! As far as the issue that you are having with your 4th gen 4Runner, you really should re-post in the 4th gen sub-forum as it will get WAY more exposure to other 4th gen owners and thus you will get more comprehensive answers.

Why, because only 4th gen guys know about rear diffs? There's nothing wrong with her posting here or in the General section, this forum is far to seclusive. Way too many posters staying in their own little gen subforum missing way too much info and input from other members in their own little gen subforums.
Welcome to the board, Jennie. There's a lot of things going on in the rear end that could make noise, and not all of them require replacing/repairing the rear diff or even have anything to do with it at all. Can you be more specific about the trouble you're having? What noise is it, when exactly do you hear it (when braking, when accelerating, at certain speeds more than others), any more details you can provide will help guys give you advice for what you should do next.

that's a bad bearing. either wheel, or differential. shouldn't be too difficult for a competent shop to diagnose, and repair.

Jennie I agree with Nevada, that sounds like a bad bearing. Make the shop tell you for sure which one it is before you pay them to replace it.
