rear door rattling

I have 2 12" visonik subs installed in my 4runner and have noticed recently that there is a decent amount of rattling occuring in the back. I have checked my subs and they don't seem to be the problem. When I open up the back door the rattling goes away, I was wondering if anyone else has had an issue with this. I am considering buying some dynomat so if anyone has information where to cheaply buy it I would appreciate that as well.

There are cheaper options than Dynamat. I'm not sure of the rattling, though it is normal on other cars with subs that parts rattle. But there is other sound deadening material out there, some cheaper than Dynamat if you're looking for cheaper.

I am looking for as cheap as possible without sacrificing too much quality, any ideas?

i have the same problem. i found out it was the liscence plate and the rear wiper. i fixed the plate by putting rubber strips on the back of it, so no more vibrating. as for the wiper......nothing i can do. i think that dynomat may fix the problem. i plan on trying it this spring when i get another sub installed. otherwise...the truck is pretty solid. i don't hear rattling elsewhere, or maybe the music is too loud : .

trancekrazy, can you hear the rattling from the license plate inside as well (decently loud) or are you talking about from outside the car. When i'm sitting in the backseat with the subs up i can hear distinct rattling. If a lot of it comes from the license plate I will be quite happy because there are things I can do with that.

yea i heard it from inside the car. try fixing the plate first, and see how much rattling is reduced. for me....it was a lot since the rear wiper isn't as loud. i think our best bet is to put sound deadening material inside the rear door and side panels of the cargo area. that will greatly improve the sound.

I haven't really kept up with any new audio, so I'm not sure. I don't remember the other brands, but a few searches on the internet should pull that info for you.

I just started getting a rattle from the tailgate too. It was driving me nuts! I popped the little panel off the door on the inside and no more rattle. I am going to put some self adhesive foam or something to prevent the rattle from coming back.

also, to get the plastic panel off of the outside, do you just snap it off? What is the best way to remove that plastic panel?

Not sure what plastic panel on the outside you are talking about. I am talking about the little panel on the inside of the car next to the pulldown strap. Just pop it off with a screwdriver and I put some self-adhesive foam rubber....no more rattles!

thats the panel i meant (not sure why i said outside). So you can snap the plastic panel off of the back with a screwdriver? What type of material did you spray on the inside? (i.e. brand name)

i got 2 12" MTX's a while back and have the same problem. I fixed the liscense plate and ive noticed the rear wiper loves to dance to the music. Also as a half assed resolution i put a cloth inside my gas tank compartment(in between the gas door and the gas cap) because that was a major issue with the rattling. then in the back there is a small door(if your looking in from the back) that is on the right side(like a storage compartment??) and that rattles too. Also my friend just got a new c-class and installed 2 12's and has a major rattling and brought it to his buddy to figure out what the deal was. Turns out loose change is a major issue with rattling. Clean your car out of all loose objects and change and see if that helps. Just some factors to consider.

I have 2 IDMAX 12's fiberglassed into the rear left side (where you normally keep your tire jack) and had the same type of rattles you guys are talking about.

I ended up putting doubled sided tape on the little plastic door on the rear tailgate as well as on the little door on the pull down strap, as they can both cause a little noise.

The shop that did my installation also glued my license plate to my license plate frame, so that takes care of that.

And then I put little rubber bumpers (you can buy these at like Target -- they're made by 3M and are supposed to be for cabinet doors, so that when you close them, they don't bang too loud) inside the gas tank door, which makes it fit tighter.

I still haven't found a solution for the rear windshield wiper and I also noticed that the tourneau cover also moves around a little bit.

But ultimately, the best way I've found to take care of the rattles is to just crank a little louder until you can't hear the rattles anymore ... works everytime. :rocker:
