rear door

[1974 FJ40]

my rear door handle does not seem to work all the time.... if I keep lifing up on it.. it will sometimes open and sometimes not... is there any adjustments to fix this?

Are you talking about the rear doors (p/s and d/s) or the lift gate?

If it's the lift gate, you most likely have corrosion, a build up of gunk or lack of lubrication in the release mechanism. Try drowning it in wd40 or similar and see what happens. There is adjustment for the latch too. You simply loosen the screws holding the mechanism to the lift gate and move it into a better position and then retighten the screws.

mine has been doing the same thing for months. lots of WD-40 worked for a while, then last week the latch mechanism just stopped locking. so, the gate would not close at all. other folks have reported that they eventually had to replace the whole latch assembly. i'm not interested in any more jerry-rigs, so i ordered mine new yesterday for $90.

make sure you don't dent the gate. i have a nice little dent from where i hit it one time

I have to squeeze the handle and push the tailgate in to get mine to open most times. Annoying, but it always works.

I have to do the same thing but it hurts my wrist to do this. I think I'll spray it down with PB plaster and see if that helps. I'm so sick of this. :bash:

mine is rusty and wd helped some, I know it will need a new handle, toyo dealer said $73 new + tx

I expected worse, now to buy a chilton/haynes and figure out how to take the inner skins off the 5th door interior to replace the hatch handle

Don't know if anyone else had this but I once was having trouble with it operating correctly and it ended up being part of the plastic coated teeth were loosing the cover and it was jamming, removed it and alls perfect now

again, i've been having the same problems. it seems like the latch mechanism was causing all the troubles. i replaced it today with a new one and now ALL of the moving parts in the tailgate, including the outside handle, are working smoothly. when i pulled out the old latch assembly it was corroded and full of dust and the lube had long since dried out. email me at [email protected] if you want instructions and photos on how to take apart the tailgate. it's pretty easy.

sure. it's 69350-35020. i ordered mine from toyotapartsbarn.com for $93.18 plus $12.11 for shipping. seemed to be the best price i could find via google last week.

For almost a decade the handle on mine usually did not return on its own.

Until I sprayed lithium grease into the mechanism, worked like a greased charm since then.

Until today when an idiot who was high as a kite rear-ended my parked car as I sat inside. Rear door is total loss, insurance might want to declare total loss which would really suck.

Had it taken part and cleaned then greased. I haven't had a prb since.
