You might find better answers in the 4th gen section from guys that have already done this. I'm pretty sure the axle widths are the same between the 4R, FJ & GX but I'm not 100%. GL!
 
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but the thought of now adding a rear locker has crossed my mind.

I get a lot of freeway miles and will wheel occasionally, and having the thought of a locker would potentially help or not.

With the increase pricing and scarcity of sourcing out a E-locker rear with switches and computer in working condition, would it be better to go with the ARB air locker with on board compressor?


In the end price wise after installation, will they even out?

Any input would be great!

These things are so old now that most used diffs have considerable wear. If you plan on doing it right the first time then get the diff rebuilt. Otherwise, the factory e-locker is quite reliable. Not prone to leaks like every air locker I've seen after time.
 
Anyone have a wiring diagram for the elocker harness? I have the elocker ecu and the button, but didn't get the harness and am looking to build my own.

You didn't mention it in your post, But you know the housing needs to be modified also right? different studs, add studs, and cut the opening larger? for an E Locker..
not shooting you down, just mentioning it's not a direct drop in replacement is all.
and X2 for a rebuild if you find a used one. unless you know it's history.

I've decided the extent of the work and the rebuilding of the diff would be too much to take in for Elocker.

Plans are to go ARB rear with a ARB 12v compressor, then maybe front later. Just the though of on board air is nice.
 
I've wanted a E-locker for my 01 since I got it 2-17. Went through same thought process as you, Patience paid off. I finally found a 2k locking rear axle 127k miles with the trailing arms panhard bar all electrical $700. Tore it down this week for gears and inspection. Bearings are well within spec by FSM. I'm doing seals, brake wheel cylinders, transfering shoes and drums 11k mi from current axle.
My point to this story, did'nt want ARB just me on that, I saved enough money going this route to put towards a Harrop E-locker for front diff.
Patience Grasshopper, can payoff.
