So I just had the clutch done on my 97 4Runner. I now have a ThunkThunkThunk sound coming from the rear of the truck. The issue is the sound is intermittent. It doesn't happen until I've been driving for more than 20+ minutes. Then it will appear slowly and get louder. Between 60-70MPH the sound is most prominent. At times there is no noise at all, then its just constant. Even at low speeds I can somewhat hear it, then its gone totally. Sometimes I will pull into the driveway and it sounds like a rubbing clunking sound. Other times nothing at all again. From everything I have read some say it could be the U-Joints. I was under the truck and see nothing loose or out of place. Even the U-Joints seem solid and have no movement. For those of you who have replaced the Ujoints what sound did you hear and what did it run you to get it all taken care of? Thanks

The vibration started right before I changed them both and the sound was constant at that time. It was my only means of transportation so I had to drive it like that. The sound was intermittent. There was no rhyme or reason to the noise. When I remove the rear u-joint to change it I found that whoever had changed it before had bent the hell out of the round part of the driveshaft that the u-joint "cap" rides in AND the "cap" was missing half of its needle bearings. It was seriously fubar. I had to reshape the driveshaft area so that the u-joint "cap" would fit properly and all is good now. U-joint replacement is a cheap fix for you and it might remedy the whole situation. I would be really surprised if that didn't solve the problem.
