Rear End Crash Protection

Like we all know that we usually can control our own vehicles and we have active safety features to get us stopped quickly and safely. One cannot predict the typical assortment of lame, drunk or distracted drivers from hitting us from the rear. Last year my 1997 4Runner was smacked hard from behind. The car that hit me was totaled with the hood ending up in the air and the front of their vehicle pushed all the way back to the motor. They had been hit by a drunk driver rocking at an estimated 50mph. The impact shredded the drunks Toyota Camry and pushed the next car into my tow hitch pushing my 4 Runner across the intersection about 14 feet from the point of impact. My question is this. My 4Runner only had $1000.00 worth of damage due to the impact on the tow hitch structure. If you gentlemen had to pick a further rear bar guard to protect the rear of the vehicle what would it be?

Probably a nice big steel/iron Nerf-like bar that mounts to the trailer hitch or something.

Then again, some personal defense like a turret mounted twin .50 calibre machine gun wouls work better. :biggrin2:
 
........gives a whole new meaning to the word incoming.........weight is always a concern....maybe just staying with the tow hitch is the best defense.......50 cals much to noisy.

LOL.

Noise can be good. After all, the guys on motorcycles bore out their mufflers for safety. Why can't this apply to my Ma Deuces?

Besides, a .50 cal round has an effective range of about a mile. I say that this is some good offense.
 
that is quite a range. maybe I'll invent air bags that deploy from the rear bumper on impact..........can just imagine Los Angeles on Nordstrom's Sale days......sight to see.

But really the recent tests given good to excellent marks for the 4Runner in frontal and side collision but many more come from the rear and the tow hitch attached to the frame is a real asset. maybe extend out from the tow hitch with a bull bar....Jaos has one but it is upwards of $700.00 and more for show IMHO.
 
Get a steal bumper, like this from CBI. A rear hitch step won't hold up taking a hit... it's only for parking lot encounters.
 
What kind of safety can you expect from a rear or even a front bull bar? Wouldn't this just act like part of the incoming car?
 
well in my case the hitch took a direct hit and protected the rest of the rear panel..but it was a "lucky" hit where the front of their vehicle matched the tow hitch perfectly. as long as the hitch or other protection makes them push your car forward rather than crushes the body of your car, at least in my mind it is safer.
 
While it's nice to be able to have a collision and yet have very little body damage, keep in mind that the body is designed to be damaged so that it absorbs impact and protects you, the occupant. The auto industry learned over the years that stronger bumpers mean less damage but also less safety.

The energy of an impact has to go somewhere. If you attach bull bars or stronger bumpers, those things will transmit it to the frame, which will be much harder to repair correctly than body parts would be.
 
Front and Rear End Crash Protection

Alaskaman, here's what I put on my truck after a rear end smack in Washington DC. I had only the step hitch bar when I was hit and it actually did quit well I added the other bars shortly after. The nice thing about the front bar (although lite) it is attached to the 4Runner in four locations. The back bar in two in conjunction with the step hitch bar. Hope this helps, all three cost under $600. CSM-H

I'm not sure adding bars on the rear will really help much... all it might do is result in even more body damage to your truck as the bars are pushed into the panels and bumper. Don't forget, a large car traveling at 40mph has plenty of momentum to bend even the thickest steel bars.

I've read many reports that suggest front or rear bars result in higher repair bills for both vehicles in a collision, which is why insurance companies in many parts of the country/world won't let you add them.

IMO body on rails is plenty strong enough to protect me from behind. It's the sides I'm more worried about.
 
I can't fathom how an insuarance company would prevent you from adding accessories on your vehicle. Unless they won't insure you, but then what's to stop you from adding it after you've been insured. The insuarance company hasn't even seen my truck since at all actually since I established insuarance over the phone with it.

My front bar is pretty much protection from the jack nutz who parrallel park by "feel." I know it's no real protection from a 5+ mph hit.
 
Bars are certainly useful for protecting from dings etc, I agree, I just wouldn't rely on them to add any significant major inpact resistance, as you say, and I'd be sure to tell my insurance company about them. Call me cautious :)

In some parts of the world (such as Australia and the UK, for example) certain types of bull bars are outright banned for safety reasons. Here in the US, my insurance company very pointedly asks me if I have added any aftermarket bars. I was told that in some cases it would increase my premium due to additional damage they'd incur on anyone/thing I might hit. If I were to tell them "no" then I added some and got in an accident, I'd worry that any accident photos they see might end up costing me my coverage.
 
What insuarance company are you with? I'll make a mental note to avoid them in the future :D

There was a story a year or so ago about how NY was going to try to outlaw them because they caused more pedestrian injuries compared to cars with normal bumpers. I wonder how that played out, I never followed it as I'm not in NY or plan on taking the truck there.

I found this article, as I too was amazed how the steel tow hitch or receiver hitch and steel bumper spared a lot of damage to my vehicle. However, it did not spare me from being injured. The energy of the crash decreases collision damage and increases injury risk to occupants.

How Receiver Hitches Affect Rear End Collision Injuries



Today, roughly 40% of the vehicles on the highway have receiver hitches – and although they are necessary for towing – they reduce rear end collision damage and INCREASE the risk of whiplash by creating a stiff"crash pulse".

In a European study by Chalmers with data from Folksam and Autoliv they concluded that a vehicle equipped with a receiver hitch (tow bar) increases the risk of whiplash by 22% if it is hit in the rear. And in the United States the most frequent vehicle accident is the rear end collision.

For those of you who are not familiar with the towing industry the “receiver hitch” is the part of a towing package that is bolted to the rear frame of the vehicle. Typically they are found on pickup trucks and larger SUVs but can be mounted on most any vehicle capable of towing.

They can be rated from a Class I to a Class V type depending on the kind of weight you will be towing. Class 1 hitches being the kind that would tow less than the Class V type. The typical Class V hitch can tow trailers up to 10,000 pounds or more.

A “ball mount” is the part that slides into the receiver hitch and allows you to tow the trailer. Ball mounts can be fitted with a 1 7/8", 2” or 2 5/16" ball for towing. Sometimes other types of ball mounts like the "Pintle hitch" can be used instead of the typical ball mount.

Receiver hitches have been shown to take impacts up to 5 mph – with the vehicle sustaining NO damage! Videos and documentation from the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS) have proven that. The IIHS now removes all receiver hitches when they do their rear bumper testing because receiver hitches prevent damage to the rear of a vehicle, so in order to get a fair comparison of bumper performance they remove them before they do any rear crash tests.

In a rear end collision involving a vehicle equipped with a receiver hitch, the crash energy is transferred directly to the frame of the "target" vehicle and then to the occupants. This isn't rocket science. If you bolt a steel beam (receiver hitch) to the steel frame rails of a pickup truck or SUV – you're going to create a stiffer "crash pulse". A receiver hitch completely changes the crash dynamics.

It has been shown that the occupants of the "target" vehicle will move forward at 2.5 times (or more) then that of the "bullet" vehicle. So a small 5 mph impact will send the occupants of the target vehicle flying forward at 12 – 13 mph – certainly enough force to hurt people. This change in acceleration or "Delta V" is what influences whiplash.

According to this European study, rear-end collisions resulting in changes in acceleration below 12 mph constitute the major part of crashes resulting in neck injuries.

The entire towing industry focuses on towing safety, however it should be the number one priority. The average person tows less than 1% of the time and according to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), 25% of the people that have a vehicle equipped with a receiver hitch don’t tow a thing. So having a vehicle equipped with a receiver hitch is a huge liability when it increases your risk of whiplash by 22% - especially when women and children are already two times more likely to get injured from whiplash then men (their necks are not as strong).

If you are involved in a rear end collision and you have a vehicle equipped with a receiver hitch chances are that the damage to your vehicle will be minimized. Although you may think this is a good thing, the biggest problem arises if you want to make an injury claim. Your insurance company will argue that since there is little damage to your vehicle, you could not have been injured – and that couldn't be further from the truth.

For the insurance company it's a win, win situation – they don't have to spend as much money fixing your vehicle and it makes it more difficult for you because low impact crash cases are becoming increasingly more complex and harder to prove when they show little damage.

You can decrease the risk somewhat by simply removing your ball mount, bike rack, cargo carrier or any other "fixed" or static (non-energy absorbing) receiver hitch product after use. It is a good first step in reducing the potential for whiplash because these products simply move the risk of whiplash outward. But the real problem still remains – the receiver hitch.

The rear end collision is on the rise with all the distractions but there are energy absorbing products on the market that you can install into your receiver hitch that will soften the crash pulse and make your receiver hitch safer. Do your homework because you really cannot afford to be without one.

Here are some interesting rear end collision facts:
Approximately 75% of all rear end collisions are less than 10 mph.
56% of all rear end crashes are straight on.
Only 14.2% of the people that hit you in the rear will miss your receiver hitch entirely.
48% of the people that hit you in the rear – are not slowing down.
It is better to have under-ride than over-ride. Under-ride will give lower acceleration in the first part of the crash.
Low speed rear end collisions (less than 10 mph) accentuate the whiplash more than high speed ones.
80% of all rear end collisions are caused by driver inattention.
The acceleration of the occupant when hit from the rear is 2.5 times or more then that of the bullet vehicle.
94% of all rear end collisions occur on straight roads.
Women are twice as likely to end up with a whiplash injury as a man.
32.1% of all fleet injuries are caused by the rear end collision.

rear end protection for 3rd row

I recently purchased a 15 sr5 with 3rd row seating. Though I do not use the 3rd row often, I do so occasionally when my daughter has her friends over and I’m shuttling them to the movies or the lake. My concern is how safe are the 3rd row passengers if we were to be involved in a moderate to severe accident. The space between the rear of the vehicle and the 3rd row is really small. I tried to see if I could locate detailed information online but was unable to find any. Anyone have access to pictures or test results, or firsthand experience.

First of all, this is an old thread.

The only energy absorbing product I could find is Unproven Bumper Products*
(link label mine, see below) It doesn't seem to be tested by any crash testing agency, so I wouldn't trust it. The rubber bumpers would have to be really stiff since the forces involved are strong. They tested only at 5mph, but it could still act as a damage multiplier or injury multiplier at higher speeds, we don't know.

When I looked closer, the article above is written by the CEO of the company that makes the only energy absorbing bumper on the market.

I did a bit more searching, and I don't think National Safety Commission is a real thing. It looks like a private company, maybe a driver's ed school, not sure if it's legitimate. But it's not the National Safety Council (which is a well-recognized non-profit organization), NHTSA, IIHS, CPSC, NTSB, DOT, governing body, regulatory agency, or anything like that.

The user that posted that only has two posts, and they are both the same article in different threads. This is bordering on spam.

*I labeled the link "Unproven Bumper Products" to try to reduce the value someone might see if they Google this and don't read the full story behind it. I don't want to contribute to the spam.

Our 4th gen 4runners score poor in IIHS head restraint testing, so I wouldn't want to add anything that increases the force of a rear-end crash.

OP, the only thing that will save you is a lower height vehicle hitting you like a car. If another lifted truck slams into you it doesn't matter what you have on the back, that truck is destroying the lift gate and anything in its path.
