Rear End Damper???

Vibration is getting worse on 2007 2WD 4.0. Yes, I've read all the threads about the rumble strips and others. Please don't post links to it. I had my drive shaft serviced by replacing the U joints and several balances to ensure we got it right. The vibrations just don't match what have mentioned repeatedly on this forum.

Still have a low speed pulse around 40 to 45 that shows up again around 60 and progressively gets worse the faster I go. The happens in overdrive and 4th. Feels like a bent tire but it doesn't seem to be the issue. I've moved my tires around and it hasn't changed it. I've had the transmission flushed. Fluid looked fine and the pan was clean with no clutch debris. However, vibration (pulsing) was there before and did not go away. Maybe a torque converter? BTW, replaced transmission mount and checked motor mounts.

The worse vibration shows around 75 and feels and sounds exactly like a bad U joint. It's not. The drive line shop believes it to be a problem in the rear end. They also mentioned the damper on the rear end yoke. Is that really a damper there and can it come loose? I read somewhere else about the drive line being "in phase". Could this be an issue?

Sounds like it could be a bent axle to me. Does anyone else drive this truck? has any one slid it into a curb or something similar? It is possible to bend an axle with out bending a wheel.

If you pulled the driveshaft and didn't mark where it was installed it could be out of phase. Take it out again, rotate it a 1/4 turn and see if it still has the same problem. Repeat until you've tried it in all 4 positions.

How do you try four positions? I can thing of two but not four. What am I missing? I'll get it up on stands tomorrow and go 180 degrees and see what happens.

Hmmm, maybe it's just 2 on the 4Runner. Last time I dealt with that issue was on my old Land Cruiser that could be rotated/turned 4 times.

Is there ANY play in the pinion flange or T-case output flange? The previous poster doesn't understand driveline phase. It can only work in one of two positions. If you did not separate it after the balance, then it can't be that. It might be front end, check wheel bearings and axles. I had a bad rear axle bearing, it growled a lot, no real vibration, but I suppose it's possible if it begins an elliptical rotation due to major wear. Check the driveline again. I have seen after market U joints slop back and forth in the yoke because the clips were too thin to hold the bearing caps in properly.

My bad. You're right. I looked again. Four bolts.

Thanks for the responses guys. The driveline has Toyota U joints installed. Zero play as well. Hope I get it on the first one. I'll have move it, go drive, move it, etc.

Pretty sure its not an axle bearing. Those noises are fairly distinct although I've never heard one in the rear before. The vibration seems to be under my feet sometimes. I'm still wondering if the torque converter isn't happy. When I flushed the fluid, we had to overfill it and then drain it to get it right. Had an air pocket somewhere that created the problem of not enough fluid.

Went to Toyota today. They've clued into a drive line. Even though I've had everything done, they still believe it is the problem. The tech says 80-90% of the time, the u joint replacement goes fine. However, the yokes are "soft" on Toyota stuff. Sometimes the replacement doesn't work and I end up with the vibrations I have. Hopefully my drive line warrantee picks it up.
