Rear End Growl....

I have a fairly obvious growling noise coming from the rear end of my 1995 T4R when decelerating.... It's not so noticeable when decelerating from lower speeds(40-50 mph) but, higher speeds(60mph and up) it's very noticeable.
It's definitely coming from the rear end but, when i had it up on a lift and was greasing the rear drive line Zerk fitting at the slip joint on the drive line.... the old grease was not over flowing like i expected it to instead, the drive line was expanding or getting longer. Correct me if I'm wrong but, I don't believe the drive line should be doing this. Maybe the old grease has hardened, so the old grease doesn't get pushed out by the new grease. Could the drive line be pushing out on the rear end causing it to bind? It's been doing it for over a year now, it hasn't gotten any worse, I checked to make sure I had diff oil, it was full! The next step is to drain the oil and check for metal shavings.
I'm assuming that if there was any damage to the ring and pinon or any other gearing that it would have failed by now.
Any educated answers would be greatly appreciated!!!

The cap on the end of the driveline will blow out b4 it could push the axle (mine did). And the springs and pinion are strong, if grease could push it then somthings loose. The grinding is probly a rear wheel bearing, that's common. U can lift the rear end and spin the wheel while holding the spring, if u feel vibration in the spring it's almost guaranteed wheel bearing

Sounds like you need a bearing kit for your rear diff. I had the same problem with my runner. I drove mine around for about 4 weeks with a growling noise coming from the rear end, the noise did progressively get worse and it got to the stage that I couldn't hear myself think. My mechanic went for a drive in the car and told me instantly that I needed a new bearing kit for the diff.
He took the diff out and pulled it apart and low and behold, the bearings were rooted big time. The mechanic told me if I had have driven much further I would've stuffed the teeth on the gears inside.
Runs a lot quieter now since the rebuild.

I had it up on a lift, got in and hit the peddle, let off the gas and heard it coming from the rear end not the wheel bearing!

Checked the U-Joints... OK!

Sounds like the problem....... How much did the repair cost you?
I've been driving mine around for over a year w/ the noise... It hasn't gotten any worse though!!

I haven't resolved to problem yet.... I'll have to take it over to my mechanic and have him check it out!
