Rear End Sad Question

Hey all,

I've got a 1990 with a saggy bum....

There is quite a bit online already regarding fixit options, but I am having trouble working out which option is best for me.

Our rocker panals are 6.5 inches above the tire in the front and 4.5 inches above in the rear. I would prefer raising the rear two inches to even it out.

We don't do heavy offroading but we do find ourselves on logging roads 2-3 times per month. I suppose our needs are mostly cosmetic.

Thoughts?

Oops...I said "rocker panel" and I meant was the highest point on "wheel well trim" above the tires

hey man. i have the exact problem wth my 87 runner, the fron it fine, but there is literally, less than an inch of clearance between the bumpstops on the rear leafs... here is a link to the thread i sarted a while ago... http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30918

the best sure is a new set of leafs, but some ghetto fixes are add a leaf kits if your leafs are still in ok condition. if you are the kind of person that (like me) HATE spending money and can weld, or have a friend that can, and want to do things themselves...

(where to get the springs)

Materials:
>angle grinder with cutting disk
>welder (MIG would be easiest, but arc would be sufficient, im gonne use arc) and proficcient knowledge on how to use it...
>some square tubing that would fit inside the spring
>springs, 150 or 200 pounds/inch
>1/2 in plate to have as brackets
>drill
>screw (for spring retainer)
>several jacks
>an ice cold one for a job well done at the end...

If I were to get the job done by a mechanic (I wish this wearnt the case...but I'm already putting in about 70 hours a week with work and school)....how much would labor cost?
 
your quite welcome! im not totally sure that this project is DOT approved :( but that never stopped anyone. if a cop pulls me over and asks what they are, i will say that its a kit i bought form the states or something (but when do cops look at your leaf springs? they would be well hidden too..) i coudlnt even guess in the slightest what a mechanic would charge, as my dad and i or just me do all mechanics work ourselves. can you weld? if not, can one of your friends weld? where abouts are you? because im in welding school, and im going to fab up a few mounts for my truck, and if you pay for shipping, i can weld some up for you. and then if you or none of your friends can weld, take your truck to a local highschool with a welding/mechanics shop, and get them to install/weld it up (the only real welding you have to do is to the part of the frame that the top bumpstop deflector was, as the bottom spring hanger is beneath the u-bolts). well most important thing, do you have leaf springs or coil over?? if you have coil over, then go to a boneyard and snag some 1/4 to 3/4 ton pickup coils and then get a mechanic to install. hope this helps, if you want, you can pm me with a shipping adress, and we can do like a cod for shipping kinda deal..

hey joewhite, do you not have coil spring in the rear? gotmud13 is talking about leaf spring, and if you have coils his quick fix wont work for you. Coils are probably easier to fix, just get some heavy duty coils installed and you'll never have to worry about it again. Here's a link specifically for sagging 2nd gens.

no worries man. i love helping people. but unfortunatly, joewhite is right, in my excitement to help, i totally forgot that 2nd gen runners dont have leafs :( there is a link from that guy that did those mods on the links i showed you that placed one big center coil on the top of the 3rd member, but that requires more modification, and time, unfortunatly. hos website is www.gearinstalls.com or something like that. the rear suspension mods are in the bottom left hand corner. that guy keeps on amazing me. but sorry i cant help. keep us updated eh?
 
Hey all....

It's been a crazy last 24 hours. Last night our 4runner got stolen. We reported it, and thought for sure in a big city like ours it was a gonner. However we were driving home from church today and saw it on the side of the road. Yay!!! All the stuff we had in it was gone (gps, mp3, and our rockclimbing gear....) but the truck was in good shape....and the thief didn't even run down the gas!

Anyway....crazy eh?

Come to find out, 86-90 4runners are th e 13th most stolen car in British Columbia

Anybody have some good suggestions on which form of auto theft device you recommend (I will never leave valuable in the car again, thats for sure)?

holy shit!!!!!! glad everying, well, almost everything is ok. where did you get that stat for bc? i live an alberta, and i am curious as to where runners rank on the alberta list. i have a cabin in bc (shuswap lake) and i will definatly keep that stat in mind when at my cabin. as for the anti theft system, i have a few suggestions. my friends dad had a 68 charger, and had 3 different devices he had to activate in order for the car to run. one was the standard keyed ingition, the second was a switch in between the fuse block and the fuel pump, the third was a switch in between the battery and something (fuse block i think). there is a big thread over at yotatech.com that has better, more indepth tricks than mine. maybe getting your locks/ignition column replaced is a good idea, along with the hidden switches. i will try to post the link to yotatech.com later on, as im having computer problems right now.

good to hear that you at least got your trucks back in 1 piece. I had also seen that list on the 4runner being the 13 most stolen car in BC, but I am not surprised since they are so awesome!! I have an Arctic Start (Compustar) alarm system, and I think the flashing blue light is what deters most would be thieves. Interesting fact i heard on the news was that Williams Lake is the car theft capital of BC, so stay clear of that place!

got a club today....i figure, ok, if they wanna cut my steering wheel, they are gonna take my car....but maybe a club will be an effective deterant for the person who just wants to joyride.

I don't think I mentioned it....but the way the thief got in was quick and efficient. PM me if you want to know how they got in.

n8buddy.....that looks like a really cool alarm system....expensive, but probably worth it.

also another theft deterrant, which i am going to do if im going to be parking in the "hood" or the ghettos of calgary, is borrow my cousins big ass rotweiler dog and stick him in the back :) or, rig up a smal blue LED light with a capacitor on it on top of the dash, simulating an alarm, without the costs.
 
We've got a "90 4runner" as well, and had similar issues even though it only has 75k. I found installing urethane bushings throughout the rear control arms and lateral rod made a huge difference in the stance. I've just ordered a set of Sway-A-Way torsion bars(25mm) and have urethane bushings for the front control arms. The originals on the front are shot and definitely effect the stance. The bushings in these trucks are far too soft which leads to distortions and variation in the suspension geometry. The urethane bushings greatly improved it handling(sway bar bushings) , ride quality, and tracking down the highway.
I'll post pics and results from the front bushing and torsion bar install when they arrive in a couple days.
