Rear Ended

Well got rear ended today on the way home from work. Luckily no damage to my truck nor no one was hurt but can't say the same about the MDX. My tow hitch went right through the front bumper, and into the radiator. It was in stop and go traffic so it was low impact. Even though I just have a minor scratch on my rear bumper, what are the odds I have frame damage? I mean it was low impact but hard enough to give me a stiff neck and a headache. It was dead center and nothing seems outta whack but im no expert. Any input from anybody is appreciated.

Glad to hear no one was hurt. I was in a similar fender bender, lady's front end was mangled while my tow hitch as bent and a few scratches on my rear bumper. You can let the insurance companies handle it or opt to cash out if there aren't any structural or mechanical mechanical damages.

We will see what the adjuster says. Would be nice to get my hitch painted and get rid of the rusty spots on it

If your hitch is damaged, they'll repair it. Might want to also check for tail pipe damage as mine was. Hopefully their insurance will make things right as much as they can by providing you with a loaner while your truck is being repaired.

I bet there are some scrapes on the rear cover, too. I'd bring it to a bodyshop just to have them look for signs of the frame being tweaked (a few measurements with a tram gauge don't take too long).

And this is why I leave my hitch on my truck even when not in use. I heard from a good friend that Illinois will give you a ticket for having a hitch on the truck if not towing something. He's had 3 friends get tickets for that. They have some useless laws in some states...

wow really? That's so unfair. If it wasn't for my hitch, I probably would've sustained some serious damage to the rear end. Im meeting with the adjuster Saturday to survey the damage. Although there is no visible damage but a minor scratch (3 in long), you can never be to sure.

here is the law, you can have the hitch assy on the vehicle, you just can't have the ball and ball mount on the vehicle:

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that if any portion of a motor vehicle hitch containing a ball mount and hitch receiver extends more than 4 inches beyond the motor vehicle's rear bumper, then the ball mount must be removed from the hitch receiver when the motor vehicle is not being used for towing. Provides that if any portion of a motor vehicle hitch extends more than 4 inches beyond the rear bumper of the motor vehicle and the hitch is composed of a single assembly that cannot be easily removed from the vehicle, then the ball of the hitch must be covered with a red cover. Defines "ball mount", "hitch receiver", and "motor vehicle hitch".
